Howard Finster emerged from the rural Appalachian culture of Alabama and Georgia to become one of America’s most important modern folk artists. A Baptist preacher and self-proclaimed “man of visions,” Finster became a fixture in American pop culture in the 1980s. His eccentric personality, prolific output, and critical and popular acclaim guaranteed him a place as one of the most visionary self-taught artists of the 20th century. Before his death in 2001, he produced more than 46,000 paintings, sculptures, drawings and prints. A variety of compelling pieces from Finster’s highly personal body of artwork will be on display courtesy of The Denton Collection.
