Young Harris College Welcomes Class of 2027

Fall heralds many things – the change of seasons, cooler temperatures, fall sports (yes, college football) - and it also signals the back-to-school time. And that’s no different at the college level, as students head to the Enchanted Valley and Young Harris College campus. Fall athletes and student leaders were able to move in first earlier last week, followed by first year students who moved in on Thursday, Aug. 10, to get familiar with the campus before classes started on Aug. 14. Upperclassmen moved in over the past weekend, Aug. 13.

Young Harris College’s rising seniors Tracy Dumakor and Jonathan Everett recently returned to the Enchanted Valley after a semester abroad at Konkuk University in South Korea. The study abroad program at Young Harris College gives students the opportunity to engage in international experiences that deepen their understanding of other cultures, languages, and people. That is exactly what Dumakor and Everett were looking for and found on during their trip to South Korea.

Young Harris College faculty members Dr. Ben Van Dyke and Dr. Matthew Byron attended this year’s Appalachian College Association (ACA) hosts Teaching and Leadership Institute. The Institute is an opportunity for instructors to share student-centered learning theories, integrated learning, and evidence-based teaching practices. As a member of the ACA, Young Harris College shares a commitment to support students through exceptional teaching and learning opportunities. To these ends, YHC staff and faculty attend the Teaching and Learning Institute, an intensive, week-long workshop delivered by experts from ACA institutions.

Young athletes often dream of recognition for their contributions to the game at the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame. For Young Harris women’s basketball standout Mackenzie Johnson, that dream has come true. Johnson’s jersey will be displayed in the Ring of Honor display at the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in Knoxville, Tenn., in recognition of her outstanding play for the 2022-2023 season. “The Ring of Honor is an exhibit at the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame where we honor the nation’s top players at every level,” said Kelly Mathis, Director of Development for the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame. “To have your jersey on display at the Hall of Fame is a huge privilege and we are proud to celebrate the accomplishments of these young women.”

Young Harris College student Jacob Perry, Master of Art in Teaching Class of 2023, spent six weeks at Wesley House, the Methodist College at Cambridge University in England, thanks to the McCollough Scholarship. Each year, this competitive, internal scholarship allows a dedicated YHC student to learn within a reflective, cross-cultural Christian community of scholarship and prayer in the Wesleyan tradition. “I cannot express my deepest gratitude to YHC, the McCollough family who funded my study at Wesley House, and my parents Jason and Tonya for this opportunity,” said Jacob. “The experience will indubitably set me up for my next degree at Duke Divinity School as well as afterwards in my vocation to help usher in God’s kingdom here on earth as it is in heaven.”

It’s one thing to study other countries and cultures in the classroom but studying them up close and in person brings that education home. That’s what students at Young Harris College did this summer, recently returning from Italy where they spent several weeks studying abroad. Building on concepts studied on campus during the spring semester, students explored the role of mythology in the arts and culture of the Italian Renaissance and beyond.

Young Harris College graduates returned to the Enchanted Valley this past weekend in droves for the annual Alumni Weekend. One of the College’s largest summer events, Alumni Weekend brings together friends, classmates, and strengthens intergenerational bonds between those who share YHC as their alma mater.

The transition to college life can be a big change for young people, which is why Young Harris College hosts incoming freshmen students for its Ready to ROAR events leading up to the start of the fall semester. Two Ready to ROAR sessions were held this past weekend, June 9 and 10.

Leadership at Young Harris College have been elected to roles with the Appalachian College Association during the ACA’s Annual Meeting on May 23-24 at Tusculum University in Greeneville, Tenn. Dr. Drew Van Horn, Young Harris College President, was elected to the Executive Committee of the ACA Board, and Provost Dr. Jason Pierce has been elected as Chair of the Teaching & Learning Committee and to the Executive Committee of the ACA Council of Chief Academic Officers. 

John Sillay, Class of 1975, has been appointed as President of the Alumni Board of Directors at Young Harris College.

John Sillay, Class of 1975, has been appointed as President of the Alumni Board of Directors at Young Harris College. A longtime member of the College community, Sillay began his service as president on April 1 and will serve for two years.
