Young Harris College Community Band to Present “Pops on the Plaza”

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – The Young Harris College Community Band will present the highly anticipated annual outdoor “Pops on the Plaza” concert on Tuesday, May 3, at 7 p.m. on the YHC Campus Plaza. The community is invited to gather lawn chairs and blankets and make plans to enjoy a memorable evening of familiar musical favorites. The performance is free and open to the public.

Directed by YHC Adjunct Instructor of Music Kerry Rittenhouse, the ensemble is comprised of talented high school and adult musicians from the local community, and performs traditional band classics as well as entertaining “pops” music.

“The annual ‘Pops on the Plaza’ concert began almost 10 years ago,” said Director of Bands and Assistant Professor of Music Mary Land, Ed.D. “This standard outdoor town band concert has developed into a beloved tradition on our campus enjoyed by community members as well as those from the College.”

The concert will include traditional marches by John Philip Sousa, concert overtures and selections from Broadway musicals.

Several YHC faculty members and students will perform in the concert. The faculty members include Adjunct Instructor of Music Alan Denmon, Adjunct Instructor of Music Cheryl Star and Adjunct Instructor of Music Mike Campbell, D.A. The student performers include junior education major Katie Rittenhouse of Blairsville, Ga., sophomore music education major Olivia Barry of Waxhaw, N.C., senior music major Courtland Walters of Stockbridge, Ga., freshman music major Justin Mason of Fairburn, Ga., and junior biology major Cassidy Starling of Lavonia, Ga.

The YHC Community Band provides an opportunity for local musicians to perform quality musical literature, serves as an educational resource for area schools and presents several free concerts every year for residents in the region.
