Young Harris College to Host Unique Musical Collaboration 9 String Theory

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Domra virtuoso Angelina Galashenkova-Reed and award-winning classical guitarist John Huston will join forces as 9 String Theory to perform in concert on Thursday, March 31, at 7 p.m. in the Susan B. Harris Chapel on the YHC campus. The concert is free and open to the public.

9 String Theory performs a variety of great music at intense virtuosity, evoking musical traditions both ancient and modern, sharing with audiences the world’s diverse musical culture.

“I am really looking forward to having 9 String Theory perform for our campus and community,” said Chair of the Music Department and Associate Professor of Music Richard Knepp, D.M.A. “It is such a unique instrumental combination and I’m sure the audience will be dazzled by their brilliant musicianship.

Galashenkova-Reed is among the greatest living virtuosos of the Russian domra—the ancient 3-string lute of Russian folk and Gypsy music. Born in St. Petersburg, at the age of 8 she began musical studies at the St. Petersburg School of Music and continued her training at the Mussorgsky College of Music and the Russian Academy of Music in Moscow. She won first prize in the Russian National Domra Competition in 1990 and first prize in the International Folk Artists Competition in 1991. She has performed throughout Europe, Australia, Japan and the United States.

Huston has distinguished himself as one of the most exciting and expressive guitarists of his generation. He has acquired numerous accolades including first prize in the 2001 Aranjuez Strings International Guitar Competition. Huston has played concerts throughout the United States, Canada, and Italy, and performs frequently with the Atlanta Opera, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and the Atlanta Balalaika Society.

“I’ve known John for a number of years, and I have always been impressed with him as a performer,” said Dr. Knepp. “I think the audience will be particularly captivated by the immense virtuosity of Angelina. She performs on an instrument that is not regularly heard on the concert stage and her technical control and musicality are absolutely unparalleled.”
