Young Harris College Hosts 26th Annual Beekeeping Institute
YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Young Harris College and the University of Georgia recently co-hosted the 26th annual Beekeeping Institute, May 10-13. Held on the YHC campus, the Institute is a four-day event consisting of lectures and workshops covering a range of beekeeping topics.
The Beekeeping Institute was founded in 1992 and represents the single most comprehensive opportunity in the Southeast for concentrated training in all aspects of practical beekeeping. With over 300 participants, this year was the largest group the Institute has seen in its 26-year history.
“I believe that this year’s Beekeeping Institute was one of the most successful yet in our 26 year history,” said YHC Professor of Biology and Chair of the Department of Biology Paul Arnold, Ph.D., who co-founded the event along with Robert Brewer, Towns County extension director, and Keith Delaplane, Ph.D., professor of entomology at UGA. “I’m especially proud of our students, and I’m also very proud of our YHC support staff, from Sodexo to the Rollins Campus Center staff, and our superb housekeeping folks, for helping us pull off another good conference.”
During the conference, participants had the opportunity to learn from internationally known apicultural biologists, enjoy the annual Honey Show, and even become Certified Beekeepers through the Georgia Master Beekeeping Program.
Eight YHC students had the chance to become Certified Beekeepers at the Institute. These students were members of Dr. Arnold’s beekeeping courses offered at YHC.
Newly certified YHC beekeepers include junior outdoor leadership majors Liam Cunningham, of Savannah, Ga., and Levi Lines, of Marietta, Ga., junior business and public policy major Hunter Pachman, of Roswell, Ga., sophomore business and public policy major Gabe Doster, of Colbert, Ga., sophomore interdisciplinary studies major Elizah Huff, of Tifton, Ga., freshman biology majors Mina Armijo, of Newnan, Ga., and Ansley Garrison, of Blairsville, Ga. and recent English graduate Eric Fancher, of Sandy Springs, Ga.
