Jeff Bauman
Associate Professor of Music

Mr. Bauman has been the Director of Choral/Vocal Studies since 1992. He has Bachelor of Arts degrees in Music Education and Music Performance from Spring Arbor College and Master of Music degrees in Choral Conducting Performance and Vocal Performance from Bowling Green State University.
Mr. Bauman has performed leading roles with Opera South Carolina, Atlanta Lyric Theater, Toledo Opera, Asheville Lyric Opera and Opera Lenawee. His orchestral appearances include performances with the Jackson Symphony and the Cleveland (OH) Chamber Orchestra.
As a choral conductor, Mr. Bauman is in demand as an adjudicator and clinician, having recently conducted 100 high school singers for the Ninth District GMEA honor choir event.
In addition to his YHC responsibilities, Mr. Bauman is the Director of Music at the First United Methodist Church of Union County.

Edwin "Sandy" Calloway
Associate Professor of Music

Dr. Calloway came to YHC in 2008 after twenty-one years at Truett-McConnell College where, as Fine Arts Division Chair and Music Department Head, he led the music department in developing the college's first four-year degree program.
Dr. Calloway has B.M.Ed. and M.M.Ed. degrees from Mississippi State University, a M.M. in Vocal Performance from Florida State University and a D.M.A. in Vocal Performance from the University of Alabama.
In 1989 he was a co-founder of the Echota Performing Arts Festival in Sautee, GA, and from 1998-2004 served the Georgia chapter of the National Association of Teachers for Singing as recording secretary and treasurer.
Dr. Calloway has performed as a vocal soloist with the Toccoa Symphony, the Northwinds Symphonic Band, the Gainesville Chorale and the Lanier Singers of Gainesville, GA. He has also performed early music programs with harpsichordist David Buice.

Karen Calloway

Ms. Calloway joined the music faculty in 2007. She has extensive vocal and instrumental (flute) experience.
Karen completed her Bachelor of Music Education (choral) from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. Her Master of Music (vocal performance) was earned at Florida State University, Tallahassee, Florida.

Dr. Keith DeFoor

Dr. DeFoor joined the Young Harris College faculty in 1998 and was named Chair of the Division of Fine Arts in 2003. He was appointed Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs in 2009.
Dr. DeFoor earned his Bachelor of Music Degree in Piano Performance from Shorter College and his Master of Music Degree in Piano Performance and PhD. in Music Theory from Florida State University. His teachers include Elizabeth Buday (piano), Edward Kilenyi (piano), Peter Spencer (theory), Ralph Tilden (organ) and Robert Steinbauer (piano).
Dr. DeFoor has been a featured piano soloist with the Southwest Florida Symphony Orchestra and the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra (FL). Dr. DeFoor has been a presenter consultant for the Georgia Council for the Arts and has served as Piano Division Chair for the Georgia Music Educators Association.
Dr. DeFoor is President-Elect of the Georgia Music Teachers Association and is an institutional evaluator for the National Association of Schools of Music and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
At Young Harris College, Dr. DeFoor has led five European Study Tours and one China Study Tour. In addition, Dr. DeFoor is the organist at the First United Methodist Church of Union County (Blairsville).

Dr. Benny Ferguson

Dr. Ferguson joined the Young Harris College music faculty as Director of Bands in 2008.
Prior to his appointment, he served as Director of Visual and Performing Arts for the Savannah-Chatham county Public Schools for 10 years. He was a member of the administrative team that founded the Savanna Arts Academy in 1998, a dedicated visual and performing arts public high school.
He is the immediate past president of the Georgia Music Educators Association and past president of the Georgia chapter of Phi Beta Mu International Bandmasters Fraternity. In April 2008, Ferguson was chosen president-elect of the Southern Division of the Music Educators National Conference.
He holds the B.A. in Music Education from Newberry College, the M.M. in Trumpet Performance from the University of South Carolina, and the Ph.D. in Music Education from North Texas State University.

Richard Knepp

Richard Knepp received his Bachelors degree from Georgia College & State University and completed his Masters degree at Georgia State University under the direction of acclaimed guitar instructor John Sutherland. Richard has also performed in masterclasses with some of the worlds leading classical guitarists, including Scott Tenant, Antigoni Goni, and Pepe Romero. He was also selected to study and perform for Manuel Barrueco in his annual masterclass at the Peabody Conservatory, and with Christopher Parkening in his annual masterclass at Montana State University. He is currently pursuing doctoral studies at the University of Georgia. Richard has also taught at institutions throughout Georgia, including Valdosta State University, Darton College, and Georgia State University. He is currently the head of the guitar programs at North Georgia College & State University and Young Harris College.

Scott Barnstead
Adjunct Instructor of Music

Mr. Barnstead was appointed adjunct instructor of music in 2007. He holds a bachelor's degree in Music Education from Furman University and a master's degree from Northwestern University in Trombone Performance.
Mr. Barnstead performed as second trombone with the American Wind Symphony of Pittsburgh, PA. He has also performed as featured soloist with the Charlotte Queen City Brass Band. He currently performs with the Brasstown Big Band, a semi-professional Jazz Big Band based in Young Harris.
Mr. Barnstead is the Director of Bands for Fannin County High and Middle School (Blue Ridge). Current professional affiliations include the Georgia Music Education Association, The National Band Association, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. He currently serves on the Marching Band Committee for GMEA.

Cynthia DeFoor
Adjunct Instructor of Music
Staff Accompanist

Mrs. DeFoor was appointed Staff Accompanist in 1998 and adjunct instructor of music in 2000. She has a Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Pedagogy from Shorter College, where she studied piano with Elizabeth Buday. Mrs. DeFoor has studied organ with Peter DeWitt and Jan van Otterloo.
She has been an independent music teacher for twenty-four years in Florida and Georgia. Mrs. DeFoor has extensive accompanying and collaborative music experience in both chamber and orchestral settings.
She is a member of Music Teachers National Association, Georgia Music Teachers Association, Northeast Georgia Music Teachers Association and the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International.
In addition to her YHC duties, Mrs. DeFoor is the Organist/Choirmaster at St. Clare's Episcopal Church in Blairsville, GA.

Alan Denmon
Adjunct Instructor of Music

Mr. Denmon was appointed Adjunct Instructor of Music in 1999. He has a Bachelor of Music in music education from Berry College and Master of Music Education degree from the VanderCook College of Music.
Mr. Denmon has 28 years of experience in public school music education and has been the Director of Bands for the Union County School System.

Leigh Miller

Leigh Miller received her Bachelor of Music degree from Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas, in 2003, where she studied clarinet with Kim Ellis and music theory with Nick Rissman. From 2004 to 2009, she attended The Ohio State University, earning Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees. While at OSU, she taught clarinet as a graduate teaching assistant, studied clarinet with James M. Pyne, and was featured as soloist with the OSU symphony orchestra and the OSU Collegiate Winds. She is now an adjunct instructor at Young Harris College in Young Harris, Georgia, where she teaches music theory and music appreciation. |

Ted Wade
Mr. Wade was appointed Adjunct Instructor of Music in 2007. He holds a Bachelor of Music Education Degree from the State University of New York in Fredonia and a Master of Elementary Education Degree from Nova University in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.
Mr. Wade was the timpanist with conductor/composer Aaron Copeland at Syracuse University, and performed with the Florida West Coast Symphony and Doc Severinsen. He has vast experience playing with theaters from off-Broadway in New York City and small theatres in Florida and New York. He has toured as a big-band and jazz drummer with the Tommy Dorsey Band, Glenn Miller Band and Rene Netto in New Orleans. He has studied with such greats as Joe Morello, John S. Pratt, Buddy Rich, Jack DeJohnette and Theodore Frazier.
He has held positions as the adjunct percussion professor at Manatee Community College in Bradenton, Florida, taught in the public school system for over 25 years and as choir director at a fine arts middle school. He is the author and producer of Fast Hands, a new drum technique book accompanied by a DVD featuring some of his students, including some from Young Harris College.
