Why study religion in college?

The study of religion is part of a well-rounded liberal arts education. The study of religion provides students with the opportunity to explore the diverse expressions of humankind’s understanding of the meaning and purpose of life in relationship to the sacred. Understanding the histories, beliefs, practices and scriptures of different religions equips students to better understand themselves and those around them in an increasingly diverse world.

Religious Studies at Young Harris…

Religious Studies at YHC supports the mission of the college to educate whole human persons in “mind, body and spirit.” Our program is a well-rounded course of study which, in keeping with our Methodist identity, is patterned after the Wesleyan Quadrilateral, drawing upon the four sources of scripture, church tradition, critical reason and human experience. Our courses can equip students to better reflect on their own spiritual lives as well as the pervasive influence of religion on the world around them.

Why get a degree in religious studies?

Students who major in Religious Studies often go on to careers in teaching or ministry. A degree in Religious Studies can also offer excellent preparation for those who are considering careers in public service, law, journalism, or international relations. There is growing recognition of the crucial role religion and interfaith understanding will play in maintaining a just and peaceful world, and people who have such understanding can make an important contribution to that world.

Young Harris College currently offers an Associate’s Degree in Religious Studies and plans to offer the baccalaureate degree in the future.
