Dr. Chaves received her B.F.A. in Acting from Otterbein College, her M.F.A. in Directing from Illinois State University and her Ph.D. in Theater Historiography from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. She co-founded a storefront theater in Chicago in the late 1990s devoted to producing new work and cultivating the work of new playwrights, and her dissertation was an ethnography of a community-based theater in Minneapolis called zAmya Theater Project, which made plays with and about people experiencing homelessness. At Young Harris, Dr. Chaves teaches Theater History, Acting, Directing and Dramatic Analysis. She also directs in the department season.
