LST 126 (Spring 08)

Liberal Arts Studies Global Warming -- LST 126 01 (Req # 4735)

This course will expose students to the interdisciplinary nature of global climate change and its consequences. Topics will first include discussion of the science behind our current understanding of climate and the current and potential future physical effects of climate change. The ethical, religious, political, economic and legal responses to this issue will then be examined. Finally, time will be devoted to potential ways that humans can mitigate the long-term effects of a warming planet. The cross-disciplinary aspect will be achieved in part through guest speakers/discussion leaders, and will be promoted through emphasis on class discussion. After the first approximately 8 weeks, the remainder of the semester will be devoted to student groups working on projects to actually make a difference. Potential projects include working with the local community on energy conservation, campus-based activities such as environmental surveys of their fellow students, or lobbying politicians. The results of their work will be presented as a poster or discussion session.
