Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), 1974

Young Harris College Staff, Faculty, and Administrators often handle confidential academic information.  Sharing of this information with anyone other than the student is regulated by FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act).  For more detailed information of YHC's current interpretation of the law see Page 44 of the Young Harris College Catalog.

What is Ferpa?  FERPA stands for the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act.  It is a federal law designed to protect the access to and privacy of students' "education records."

What is an "education record?"  An education record is any information directly related to the student that is maintained by an educational agency or by a party acting for the agency or institution.

Student's Rights--the student has the right to:

  • inspect his or her education record.
  • seek amendment to an education record that the student believes in inaccurate or misleading.
  • have some control over the disclosure of information from his or her education record (excludes internal disclosure)

Private information includes but is not limited to:

  • Grades
  • Courses taken
  • Test scores
  • Advising records
  • Education services received
  • Disciplinary actions

YHC Public Information ("directory information") includes:

  • Name
  • Address
  • Telephone listing
  • Program of study
  • Degree sought
  • Expected date of completion of degree requirements and graduation
  • Degrees and awards received
  • Dates of attendence
  • Previous institution(s) attended
  • Participation in officially recognized activities and sports
  • Weight and height of athletic team members
  • Classification (grade level)
  • Class schedule
  • YHC e-mail address
  • Date and place of birth
  • Photograph
