Courses Related to Program of Study

ODE 101- Introduction to Outdoor Education - 3 semester hours credit
This course examines the philosophy, history, theory and practice of outdoor education. This course includes field experiences and introductions which may include backpacking, back country living skills, paddle sports, rock climbing and environmental stewardship.*Students will be required to attend one weekend outing.


ODE 201 – Leadership and Group Dynamics in Outdoor Education - 3 semester hours credit
The focus of this course will be upon leadership and group dynamics pertinent to wilderness settings and outdoor education programs. This course will provide theoretical and experiential comprehensions of small group dynamics, communication, problem solving, decision-making, group roles, group management activities, leadership roles and styles. Several field experiences are required for this course.


ODE 204 – Principles and Methods of Outdoor Experiential Education - 3 semester hours credit
This course examines the theoretical and practical approaches of experiential learning in outdoor settings. In addition to exploring the historical, philosophical and psychological foundations of experiential education, students will receive instruction related to planning, conducting and evaluating outdoor experiential activities.


LST 127 – A Survey of Wilderness Literature - 1 semester hour credit
This course surveys a variety of literary works, essays and poetry that focus on the theme of wilderness. Students will explore human impact, ethical use, preservation, value, appreciation and personal connections to wilderness. In addition to reading, class discussions, reflective writing and journaling, this course will incorporate experiential components including several field experiences and a day hike.


PED 145- Whitewater Kayaking - 1 semester hour credit
This course is designed to introduce students to the fundamental paddling techniques, skills, rescues, equipment, and trip planning issues for kayaking in whitewater environments. Skills will include, wet exits, kayak roll, strokes and maneuvers, river reading, river rescues and group safety. Students will also learn and utilize environmentally sound and ethical practices for water based trips. Participants, upon successful course completion, may be eligible to earn American Canoe Association participation cards for whitewater kayaking. Students will be required to pass a swimming proficiency test and attend a weekend outing.


PED 146- Canoeing - 1 semester hour credit
This course is designed to introduce students to the fundamental paddling techniques, skills, rescues, equipment, and trip planning issues for canoeing in lake, moving water and river environments. Students will also learn and utilize environmentally sound and ethical practices for water based trips. Participants, upon successful course completion, may be eligible to earn American Canoe Association participation cards for essentials of river canoeing. Students will be required to pass a swimming proficiency test and attend a weekend outing.


PED 147- Rock Climbing - 1 semester hour credit
This course is designed to introduce students to the fundamental techniques, skills, systems, equipment, safety and trip planning issues for top rope climbing and rappelling. Students will also learn and utilize environmentally sound and ethical practices for land based trips. Students will be required to attend a weekend outing.
