Physical Education Course Descriptions

100 Adapted P.E. - 1 semester hour credit
A course designed to provide the opportunity for students to understand and relate to handicapped individuals, as well as to recognize the emotional, mental, and physical torment of the different handicaps. Students will learn the physical, emotional, and social expectations of different age groups in order to recognize any alterations from the norm. They will learn and practice making and/or altering equipment to satisfy differences and to practice modifying physical activities to meet individual needs.

101 Archery - 1 semester hour credit
A course designed to provide basic skills, knowledge, and ability in archery. In addition, the student will acquire a knowledge of the rules, sportsmanship, and courtesies of archery.

102 Badminton - 1 semester hour credit
The instruction of fundamental skills in badminton, designed to acquaint students with the game and a complete understanding of the rules.

103 Basketball - 1 semester hour credit
A course designed to develop, improve, and execute the fundamental basketball skills at a minimum level of competency. The student should be able to apply the basic skills in actual game situations and become knowledgeable of terminology and general rules of basketball.

105 Fitness for Life - 2 semester hours credit
This course is designed to provide students with three hours of aerobic exercise and one-hour of lecture each week. The lectures will cover such topics as cardiorespiratory endurance, basic nutrition and fitness, common fitness injuries, weight control and maintenance of body composition, stress management, and lifetime fitness activities.

106 Rhythms - 1 semester hour credit
A course designed to provide students the opportunity to experience social, folk, and square dance. The students will study the history of the dances, but the major focus will be on dancing. They will experience the elegance of social dance, the uniqueness of folk dance, and hoe-downness of square dance.

107 Golf - 1 semester hour credit
The instruction of fundamental skills in golf, plus a complete understanding of the rules of the game. In addition, students will develop a knowledge of the sportsmanship and courtesies of golf.

108 Jogging - 1 semester hour credit
A course designed to provide the basic skills, knowledge, and ability in jogging. Students will be required to maintain a journal in which they record their exercise program and to jog a minimum of three times a week.

109 Recreational Sports - 1 semester hour credit
A course that provides the basic skills, knowledge, and ability in numerous sports. The sports involved will be determined by the class enrollment as well as the interests of the students.

110 Hiking - 1 semester hour credit
A course designed to provide students an opportunity to experience the mountains first hand and to introduce them to fitness concepts involved with hiking. Students will provide their own equipment for day hiking. First aid, safety, and conditioning will be discussed and practiced. Students will be taught how to organize a day and overnight hiking expedition. No previous experience is necessary.

111 Soccer - 1 semester hour credit
This course is designed to introduce students to the fundamental skills of soccer: passing, shooting, trapping, receiving, heading, dribbling, and goalkeeping. Basic strategies of soccer will be introduced, including the basic strategy of creating space.

112 Softball - 1 semester hour credit
The instruction of fundamental skills of softball. The aim of the course is to acquaint students with basic skills of the game and a complete understanding of the rules.

113 Bowling - 1 semester hour credit
A course designed to teach bowling skills including scoring, etiquette, basic terminology, and rules. Students will receive instructions at a nearby bowling center.

114 Tennis - 1 semester hour credit
A course that introduces the student to the fundamentals of the sport of tennis and provides the student with the skills and knowledge needed to participate in this lifetime sport.

125 Synchronized Swimming - 1 semester hour credit
A course designed to introduce the student to the basic components of synchronized swimming, including stroke adaptations, sculling for propulsion and support, simple and complex figures, and limited hybrid figures. Creative aspects include choreography of compositions for both solo and group performances set to music.

126 Water Safety Instruction - 2 semester hours credit
Prerequisites: 17 years of age on the first day of class; hold a current advanced lifesaving certificate (American Red Cross); and possess swimmer level aquatic skills. This course is designed by the American Red Cross to train and certify persons to teach swimming and water safety. All swimming strokes and advanced lifesaving skills are reviewed. Sixty to seventy percent of the class time is devoted to practice teaching by the candidates. Exams include written, practical, and others that are appropriate. To earn the American Red Cross Water Safety Certificate, a candidate must complete all requirements and must demonstrate both the necessary personal and professional qualities expected of water safety instructors.

127 Sailing - 1 semester hour credit
Prerequisite: Must pass a swimming test to check swimming ability (must be at least an intermediate swimmer). A course designed to teach the beginning skills needed for sailing. PFDs (personal flotation devices) will be required and will be provided by the instructor. Students will be responsible for their own transportation to and from class (Lake Chatuge). Students who successfully complete specified requirements may earn American Red Cross Sailing Certificates.

131 Snow Skiing - 1 semester hour credit
A course designed to introduce students to snow skiing. The course is taught for one week during the Christmas holidays at one of the ski resorts in the southern Appalachian Mountains.

135 Introduction to Basic Fitness - 1 semester hour credit
This course introduces students to the knowledge, fundamentals, and practices of basic fitness through participation in such activities as weight training, swimming, jogging, and aerobics.

137 Yoga I  - 1 semester hour credit
Hatha Yoga is an ancient form of self-care that enables one to improve balance, coordination, strength, and flexibility by performing a series of postures, either cardio-vascular or restorative.  Regular yoga practice creates a life-long relationship with exercise.

138 Yoga II  - 1 semester hour credit
Pre-requisite: Yoga I.  Hatha Yoga is an ancient form of self-care that enables one to improve balance, coordination, strength, and flexibility by performing a series of postures, either cardio-vascular or restorative.  Regular yoga practice creates a life-long relationship with exercise.

141, 142, 143, 144 Athletic Roster - 1 semester hour each
A student athlete may obtain physical education credit for participating in an intercollegiate sport. To be eligible to register for this course, the student must be a member of the men's soccer team, women's soccer team, women's tennis team, men's baseball team, or women's softball team.
