Holiday Show at Rollins Planetarium Explores Christmas Traditions of Light
YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Young Harris College’s O. Wayne Rollins Planetarium will present four special presentations of the perennial holiday favorite Season of Light in November and December. The shows are scheduled for select Friday evenings at 8 p.m. on Nov. 13 and 20 and Dec. 4 and 11. Planetarium admission is $3 for adults, $2 for students and free with YHC ID.
Bring the entire family and celebrate the holidays through the wonder of the Rollins Planetarium’s star-filled sky in Season of Light, a show about the coldest and darkest of seasons—and a time that holds some of the warmest and brightest celebrations of the year.
Narrated by NPR’s Noah Adams, Season of Light explores the traditions surrounding the world’s most endearing holiday customs, all of which involve lighting up the winter season—from the burning of the Yule log to sparkling Christmas tree lights and candles in windows, from the lighting of luminaries in the American Southwest to the traditional ritual of the Menorah.
Visit the winter constellations of the Northern hemisphere, learn why we have seasons, and take a deeper, scientific look at the special star that led the Wise Men to Bethlehem.
The show recounts the religious and cultural rituals observed during the Christmas season, and explores some of the more light-hearted seasonal traditions, such as gift-giving, kissing under the mistletoe, songs about lords a-leaping and ladies dancing and the custom of decking the halls with greenery and candles. St. Nicholas, Kris Kringle and Santa Claus are also part of this heart-warming holiday celebration.
Ranked third largest in Georgia by dome size, Rollins Planetarium features a state-of-the-art GOTO Chronos Space Simulator star projector with a state-of-the-art full-dome digital projection system, the Sky-Skan Definiti, in a 40-foot dome theater. In addition to a full annual schedule of evening public shows, it offers daytime educational opportunities for school groups throughout the year. Rollins Planetarium is located in the Maxwell Center on the campus of Young Harris College.
If skies are clear, the Young Harris College Observatory is open immediately after planetarium shows. The observatory features a Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope and is located about 1.5 miles from campus at Brasstown Valley Resort. Maps are available at the planetarium. Observing sessions last up to one hour and include a guided tour of the constellations. The observatory is open on the same dates as Rollins Planetarium.
