Theatre Young Harris to Present Tony Award Winner ‘Dancing at Lughnasa’

Performances begin at 7 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, and 2 p.m. on Sunday in Dobbs Theatre, located inside Goolsby Center on the YHC campus. Tickets are $10 or $5 with a YHC ID. Tickets are on sale now through the Young Harris College Box Office located in the Gooslby Center lobby. Box office hours are Monday-Friday, 3-5 p.m. Tickets may be purchased online anytime at www.yhc.edu/tickets.

Winner of the 1992 Tony Award for Best Play, the Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Broadway Play and the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Play, Dancing at Lughnasa is a remarkable drama that tells the story of five sisters clinging to each other in 1936 rural Ireland. Set during the ancient festival of Lughnasa, the family maintains a separate existence from the revelry surrounding them, except for an old radio that serves as their only link to the romance and hope of the world at large. Chosen by Time magazine as one of the ten best plays for 1991, saying it is “the most elegant and rueful memory play since The Glass Menagerie,” this magnificent play is a celebration of life, love and memory that the New York Times says “does exactly what theatre was born to do.” The New York Post calls it “simply a wondrous experience.”

Theatre Young Harris is a performing arts organization of Young Harris College. Each season, the theatre company presents a full lineup of notable productions, including full-length musicals, innovative dramas, classic plays, children’s shows and more. Auditions are open to students, faculty and staff of Young Harris College as well as the community. Theatre Young Harris is directed by Eddie Collins, chair of the theatre department at Young Harris College.
