Young Harris College is a selective liberal arts institution serving students who demonstrate strong academic commitment.  Founded in 1886 and affiliated with The United Methodist Church, the College currently enrolls approximately 700 students across four divisions - Fine Arts, Humanities, Mathematics and Science, and Social and Behavioral Sciences- with a student-to-faculty ratio of 12:1.  Young Harris College enjoys a strong endowment and is engaged in significant expansion after receiving approval in 2008 from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) to begin offering baccalaureate degrees in a number of fields.  The College will also be making application to the NCAA for Division II status in June of 2010.  Young Harris College is located two hours north of Atlanta and two hours south of Asheville, NC in the beautiful North Georgia Mountains.

>>Director of Development

Young Harris College seeks an experienced fundraiser to serve as the Director of Development. Reporting to the Vice President for Advancement, the Director has significant fundraising responsibilities that complement the College's cultivation of donors and the goals of the capital campaign. 

The Director of Development focuses on relationship building, gift cultivation and solicitation, and initiation and implementation of giving programs and activities that support the College's fundraising goals. Responsibilities include:

  • Implementing programs and initiatives to raise unrestricted funds, including the Annual Fund, Local Scholarship Fund, Parents Fund, Phonathon and Golf Tournament.
  • Identifying, cultivating, soliciting and maintaining donors for the College with a focus on increasing annual giving and local scholarships.
  • Building and nurturing positive relationships between individuals and community groups and the College.
  • Articulating effectively the College's mission and goals so they resonate with alumni, friends and potential donors.
  • Preparing letters, proposals, reports and other communication materials in conjunction with the cultivation and solicitation of donors.
  • Working with the Alumni Office to identify potential donors and to promote support to the College at activities and events.
  • Working with the Communications and Marketing Office to encourage annual giving and support of the College through publications and other marketing materials.
  • Developing positive, productive relationships with administrators, faculty and staff across the College community.
  • Accompanies senior administrators and others, as designated, on cultivation or solicitation calls. 

The successful candidate will have:

  • Experience in successful fundraising activities, preferably in a private college setting.
  • Ability to manage multiple responsibilities and projects, including the Annual Fund, Parents Fund, Local Scholarship Fund and the Phonathon, as well as fundraising events, such as a golf tournament.
  • Professional presence to represent the College and Office of Advancement to both internal and external audiences.
  • Willingness and ability to travel extensively and work irregular hours, including weekends.
  • Ability to identify, engage and motivate gift prospects and volunteers.
  • Effective and persuasive communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Ability and confidence to develop and nurture relationships with established and prospective donors including individuals, businesses, churches and foundations.
  • Understanding of budgets and records associated with an advancement program.
  • Ability to work under pressure of deadlines and dollar goals.
  • Strong work ethic and effective interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to link the needs and interests of donors to possible gift opportunities for the College.
  • Strong professional interpersonal skills as well as the ability to work as a team member and to take direction.
