Malware/Spyware Prevention Guide
User Tips
- Never click pop-up boxes unless you absolutely have to. Be mindful of pop-ups that ask you a “Yes” or “No” question. Most of the time clicking either will install malware to your system. It is best to close any sketchy pop-up by right-clicking it on the taskbar and selecting “Close.”
- Do not install false spyware removal tools. If a pop-up asks you to install a malware/spyware removal tool then it is most likely going install spyware itself.
- Avoid peer-to-peer programs. Not only are such programs not allowed on the Young Harris College campus network but programs that allow users to share files such as Kazaa are often packed with malware.
- Avoid pornography, warez, and other pirating sites as they often contain malware that automatically installs to your system without your consent or knowledge.
- Avoid “free” programs. Many free downloadable programs contain lots of malware. Be sure to read up on any program you would like to download before downloading it to be sure it is safe.
Plugging Security Holes
- Keep your system up-to-date. Critical updates are vital to the good health of your computer. Microsoft release updates daily on their website www.windowsupdate.com. Also YHC's Clean Access System checks to make sure you have all critical updates installed.
- Maintain an up-to-date antivirus program. YHC's Clean Access System checks to make sure an antivirus program is installed and up-to-date. If you are in need of antivirus protection, you may download Sophos Antivirus here.
- Have Pop-up blocking software installed and enabled on your system. Most browsers such as Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox have these installed and enabled by default. Third party pop-ups blockers can be effective but are often annoying and cumbersome to use.
