Network Configuration

Most new computers with Windows XP or Vista require no special configuration to operate on campus network from dorm rooms. Students wishing to use their personal computers in their dorm rooms can bring their computers to the Department of Information Technology for a network configuration if needed. When you bring your computer we will check to see if your computer has the necessary hardware to connect to the network. At this time we will also install an anti-virus protection program if requested.

Some computers will require the purchase of a network card. These are available on-campus at the Campus Store.

Antivirus

Due to the destructive nature of modern computer viruses, all computers that access the YHC network must have an up-to-date antivirus protection program installed. Appropriate antivirus software, as well as regularly updated antivirus definitions will be provided by the Department of Information Technology.  This antivirus software is required by YHC's Clean Access system.

Starting Fall semester 2007 students will be required to use an antivirus product provided by the college. This includes the antivirus product formly supplied by the college (Etrust Antivirus 7.1) or our current antivirus product (Sophos). You may download Sophos Antivirus here. Starting Fall semester 2008, all students will be required to use Sophos exclusively.

YHC Secure Connect

YHC Secure Connect is a method for accessing the benefits of the YHC network from off-campus.  Services and features such as library databases, file storage, and other Intranet resources are made available from off-campus while you are conncected through YHC Secure Connect.  For more information or to download the latest version of the software, click here.

Malware

Malware is a general term that includes trojans, viruses, spyware, adware, worms, and hijacking. It is a growing problem among all Internet users. You can take steps to protect yourself from such attacks by following the guidelines in our online guide.

File Storage

Many classes require you to keep your work in a folder on the YHC campus network. Students can access their file storage by logging into any campus maintained computer such as the computers in the library and computer labs with your issued student username and password. Please be aware that all files are subject to deletion at the end of each semester.

Additionally, you may access your network files by using WebDAV when in the residence halls or through YHC Secure Connect.  For more information on how to access your files through WebDAV, click here.

Wireless Access

YHC now offers wireless access throughout most of the campus with increased coverage growing every year. At this time wireless access is NOT guaranteed in the residence halls. Easy to follow instructions for wireless configuration are available at the Department of Information Technology. If you would like your computer or laptop configured for wireless access, you may also bring you computer to the Department of Information Technology to be configured with a valid student ID. Wireless access requires a wireless network card. Wireless network cards can be purchased at the campus store if you do not have one.

Email is the official means of communication between students and the faculty and staff. Email accounts are provided by Young Harris College. Students are REQUIRED to check their email on a regular basis.
