2009 Young Harris College

Catcher Kenny Swab will be joining the Cavaliers of the University of Virginia. Eric Swegman will be attending the University of Georgia, and Bryson Smith will be suiting up for the Florida Gators. C.J. Smith is heading north to team up with former Mountain Lion Michael Glantz and Coach Eric Folmar. Lefty Matt Crouse will be joining the pitching staff at the University of Mississippi. Bryan Cole will be taking the hill for Liberty University, where he will be reunited with former Mountain Lions coaches Garrett Quinn and Jeremy Boles and teammate Mark Swanson. The trio of Austin Schultz, Derrick Lowery, and Andrew Chilcoat will be taking their talents to Cullowhee to the campus of Western Carolina University, where they will be joining up with former Assistant Coach Alan Beck and Trevor Collias. Kurt Frisbee is heading to Boone, NC and the campus of Appalachian State University where he will team up with former Mountain Lions Assistant Josh Jordan. Bryson Smith
|
In addition to their commitments to four year schools, Young Harris players were honored by the conference as well. Eight players were selected to the 2009 GJCAA All-Conference team. First team selections were Bryson Smith, Travis Echols, Daniel Warzon, and Derrick Lowery. Infielders Clay Remole and Austin Schultz, catcher Kenny Swab, and pitcher C.J. Smith were all named to the second team. Bryson Smith was unanimously named GJCAA Player of the Year, after breaking the school’s single season record for batting average (.467), tied the record for homeruns (21), and finished second in hits (99), and RBIs (90).
The individual success was not limited to just the players. Head Coach Rick Robinson won his 500th game as head coach of Young Harris College, and led his team to a 44 win season.
Though the team did not achieve its ultimate goal of returning to the JUCO World Series, there are plenty of milestones it can view proudly. The team shattered a vast majority of the school’s offensive records. They broke the records for batting average (.381), runs scored (642), doubles (146), homeruns (85), runs batted in (610), slugging % (.598), fewest strike outs (257), and on base % (.473).
All good things must come to an end, and such is the case for the 2009 season for the Young Harris College Mountain Lions baseball team. However, 2010 looks to be another promising year as the Mountain Lions will be returning 20 freshmen, who will be joined by a talented class of recruits.
Young Harris College Baseball would like to thank all of its families, fans, and supporters for their contributions to the 2009 season. We are looking forward to another great year of Mountain Lion baseball with you in 2010!
