Woodhead signs with USCB

Young Harris College sophomore Sally Woodhead continues her collegiate athletic career as she enters the 2008-2009 academic year. Woodhead signed to play golf at the University of South Carolina Beaufort. The USCB sand sharks are members of the Florida Sun Conference. The women's golf program was started in the fall of 2007 under the leadership of Coach Gavin Greenville-Wood. Young Harris golf administrator Danny Rubino says, " In her two years at Young Harris College, Sally did a fantastic job for the tennis and golf teams. We expect her to do a fantastic job on the USCB team and help lead them to a contending spot in their region."
Woodhead was a member of the Young Harris College women's tennis team from 2006-2008. As a freshman, she played No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles. Sophomore year she played No. 3 singles and No. 1 doubles. Woodhead helped lead her team to the Region XVII semifinals both years and was team captain for the 2007-2008 tennis season. YHC Head Coach Alli Hillman describes her as a "solid player whose powerful strokes and determination on the court placed her at the top of the line up for the entire season." Sally is studying Hospitality and Tourism with plans to work in hotel management and tourism in a foreign country.

YHC tennis ends the season in Tifton, GA.
Participating in the NJCAA Region XVII tournament, the Lady Mountain Lions took third place behind Georgia Perimeter College and the winner, Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College.
Playing No. 3 doubles for YHC, Carrie Dixon and Nicole Richardson defeated GPC's Adeshigbin and Daniels to advance to the finals of the tournament. The pair was then defeated by ABAC's No. 3 doubles, 6-1, 6-3. YHC was also represented in the finals at No. 4, 5, and 6 singles. In the semi-finals Carrie Dixon, playing No. 4 for YHC defeated GPC's Adeshigbin in a three set match 3-6, 7-5, 6-1. Dixon advanced to the finals where she was defeated by ABAC's Chade Scott. Larsen Wilkinson defeated GPC's Christina Daniels at No. 5 taking her into the finals against ABAC's Calli Robinson. Robinson defeated Wilkinson 6-1, 6-1. Megan Wheatley, playing No. 6, also defeated GPC in the semi-finals and was defeated by ABAC's Nicole Hall with a score of 6-4, 6-2 in the final round.
YHC ends their season with a 7-5 record.

The Moutain Lions grab another victory with an 8-1 win over Spartanburg Methodist College.
Larsen Wilkinson and Sara Vaughters defeated SMC's Harper and Smith at No. 2 doubles. The Pioneers grabbed a point at No. 1 doubles but this would be the only point for the team. YHC went on to sweep the singles matches. Megan Wheatley, playing No. 5 for YHC, defeated McClurevicars to take the first singles point. Sarah Beth Britt gave up only 1 game, defeating SMC at No. 1 singles. Sara Rodgers, Carrie Dixon, and Larsen Wilkinson went on to take points at No. 2, 3 and 4 singles to finish the match with an 8-1 win.

In Tuesday's home match, the Mountain Lions fell 5-4 to GA Perimeter. GPC took a 2-0 lead after doubles, winning at No. 1 and 2. Carrie Dixon and Nicole Richardson grabbed a point for YHC, defeating Caldwell and Adeshigbin at No. 3 doubles.
Both teams took 3 of the 6 singles matches. Yooha Nam defeated Sarah Beth Britt to score the first singles point for GPC. Larsen Wilkinson then took a point for YHC when she won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 singles. Sara Rodgers fell to GPC's No. 2 player Vi Truong. Maria Bagnati won the 5th point for the Jaguars when she defeated Sally Woodhead 6-4, 6-1. Megan Wheatley, playing No. 6 for YHC, defeated Alice Jackson in a three set match. After losing 4-6 in the first set, Carrie Dixon came back to win the second set 7-5. Dixon defeated Adeshigbin 10-7 in a third set tie breaker.

The Lady Mountain Lions traveled to Brevard College Tuesday and were defeated 7-2 by the Tornados.
After losing points at No. 1 and 2 doubles, Carrie Dixon and Nicole Richardson grabbed a point for YHC when they defeated Brevard's Emily Barrick and Kayley Duval at No. 3 doubles.
Brevard went on to take 5 of the 6 singles matches. Sara Rodgers took Kayley Duval into a third set but was defeated 6-2. Larsen Wilkinson, playing No. 4 for YHC, also split sets with Kimberlee Cooper. She was defeated by Cooper in a tie breaker for the third set. Megan Wheatley scored the only point in singles when she defeated Merek Slagle at No. 6 singles.
YHC is scheduled to compete in 3 more home matches this season and then travel to Tifton for the Region Tournament.

Mountain Lions fall to Sewanee Tigers.
After two wins at home this week, YHC was defeated 8-1 on the road . Sewanee took all three doubles points, not giving up more than 3 games in each match. Carrie Dixon, playing No. 4 singles for YHC, grabbed the only team point when she defeated Abby Rudd. Dixon and Rudd battled in the first set, ending in a 7-2 victory for Dixon in a tie breaker. Dixon went on to win 6-1 in the second set.

YHC v. Snead State CC
In the second home match of the week, YHC defeated Snead State CC, with a 9-0 sweep. The Mountain Lions took the lead after doubles. Yearta and Vaughters won 8-4 at No. 2 doubles, followed by an 8-6 victory by Britt and Woodhead at No. 1.
Sarah Beth Britt, holding the No. 1 singles position for YHC, defeated Jane Bohlman to grab the first singles point for the team. Sally Woodhead, playing No. 3, dominated the first set winning 6-0. Woodhead gave up 5 games in the second set but defeated Nancy Machen 6-0, 7-5. Sara Rodgers earned another point for the home team at No. 2 singles. After losing the first set in a tie breaker, Carrie Dixon came back to take the second set 6-0. Dixon defeated Austin Collie 11-9 in a tie breaker to win the match. Larsen Wilkinson finished off the sweep, defeating Sara McKnight at No. 5 singles.

Young Harris defeats Reinhardt College 5-4
In Wednesday's match up against Reinhardt, YHC took a 2-1 lead after doubles. Sara Rodgers and Larsen Wilkinson grabbed an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles, followed by No. 1 doubles, Sarah Beth Britt and Sally Woodhead, defeating Stone and Dalfonso 8-5.
Reinhardt tied the score at 2-2 when Bekah Dalfonso defeated Sarah Beth Britt at No. 1 singles. Anne Yearta struggled with a close first set taking her into a tie breaker, but quickly won a 6-1 second set to help the team take the lead. Carrie Dixon defeated Melissa Dond at No. 4 singles to give YHC a 2 point lead. Reinhardt's Kasey Nichols defeated Sally Woodhead to take the point at No. 3. Sara Rodgers secured the win when she defeated Natalie Stone 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2. Larsen Wilkinson and Stephanie Fuller battled it out at No. 5 singles, before Wilkinson was defeated in a tie breaker 15-17.

Back on the road after a tough loss this weekend, the Lady Mountain Lions gain another win, defeating LaGrange College 7-2.
After doubles, YHC took a 3-0 lead over LaGrange. No. 1 and 2 doubles each gave up 3 games to the Panthers. Anne Yearta scored the first singles point for YHC, defeating Kelsey Tinker 6-0, 6-1. Carrie Dixon finished shortly after, winning 6-3, 6-2. Sally Woodhead won a quick first set. Although she kept only a 1 game lead throughout most of the second set, she defeated Rachel Watson to gain another point for YHC.
Sara Rodgers fell to LaGrange's Becky Johnson in a tough, 3 set match. After losing the 1st set, Rodgers came back from 2-5 in the 2nd set to split sets with Johnson. Johnson defeated Rodgers 6-4 in the 3rd set. Sarah Beth Britt grabbed another point for YHC at No. 1 singles. Britt defeated Sara Foshee in a 3 set match after coming back from a 3-6 loss in the 1st set.

ABAC defeats YHC 9-0
In the first region match of the spring season, the Lady Mountain Lions lose to ABAC. ABAC grabbed 2 points at No. 1 and 2 doubles. Sara Rodgers and Larsen Wilkinson, playing No. 3 doubles, kept the lead until after the change over at 5-4. ABAC won the next two games, taking the lead 6-5. The YHC pair won two more games before being defeated with a final score of 8-6.
ABAC went on to sweep all 6 singles, winning the match with a final score of 9-0.

The Mountain Lions seize another victory after sweeping LaGrange College 9-0.
YHC's No. 1 singles player Sarah Beth Britt had a great day after winning 8-4 at No. 1 doubles, followed by a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 1 singles. Britt's partner, Sally Woodhead, also grabbed another point after defeating Rachel Watson at No. 3 singles.
Anne Yearta and Sara Vaughters won a quick match at No. 2 doubles, defeating Rachel Watson and Kelly Lane 8-2.
Sara Rodgers and Carrie Dixon each only lost 1 game, winning No. 2 and No. 4 singles for YHC.
The Mountain Lions are now 3-1. They will travel to Covington March 22 to face ABAC in a region match.

In a close match against Emmanuel College, YHC earns another win for the season with a final score of 5-4.
Emmanuel took the lead after winning 2 of the 3 doubles. Celeste Peek and Nicole Richardson, playing No. 3 for YHC, defeated Ashlyn Holland and Anne MacMillan 8-1. Emmanuel took the No. 1 and 2 doubles, winning close matches, 9-7 and 8-6.
Megan Wheatley, playing No. 6, earned YHC's first singles point when she defeated Anne MacMillan 6-1, 6-2. Anne Yearta won a quick match at No. 5, defeating Ashlyn Holland 6-1, 6-1. Sara Rodgers earned the fourth point for YHC when she won 6-1, 6-2 at No.2 singles. Emmanuel won at No. 3 singles, leaving the score 3(EC)-4(YHC). Carrie Dixon secured the fifth point for YHC, defeating Johnna Mouchet at No. 4. Emmanuel's Rochelle Dobbs defeated Sarah Beth Britt in a 3 set match at No. 1 singles.

Shorter College defeats Young Harris 8-1
At the first home match of the season, the Mountain Lions faced tough competition. Shorter College took a 3-0 lead after doubles and went on to quickly grab 2 more points at No. 1 and 2 singles. Anne Yearta, playing No. 5 for YHC lost the first set in a close tie breaker (7-9). She was defeated by Shorter's Carolina Brigneti in 2 sets. Larsen Wilkinson earned YHC a point when she defeated Kristy Walker 6-0, 7-5.
YHC Mountain Lions are now 1-1 this season.

The YHC Women's tennis team begins this spring season with a 7-2 win over Huntingdon College.
The Mountain Lions grabbed a 2-1 lead after doubles. Sophomores Sarah Beth Britt and Sally Woodhead defeated Amanda Thomley and Katie West at No. 1 doubles. Carrie Dixon and Nicole Richardson, playing No. 3 doubles, secured another point for the team after winning a close match (9-7) against Hannah Dickinson and Nicole Weldon.
At No. 5 singles, Carrie Dixon pulled out a big win defeating Dickinson 6-1, 6-2. Anne Yearta, playing No. 6 for YHC, also won 6-3, 6-4. Sara Vaughters, who was down 0-5 in the first set, came back to win in two sets, battling through tie breakers in each set. Sally Woodhead, playing No. 3, defeated Kristin McDaniel in a very close match (7-5, 7-6). Sara Rodgers, who holds the No. 2 position, defeated Amanda Thomley in a 6-2, 6-2 victory.
