Kathy Insel Brown
2006 National Soccer Coach of the Year!

Kathy Brown started the Young Harris College women's soccer program in 1997. She came to Young Harris with experience at the Division I level. She served as the assistant coach for Jacksonville State University's soccer program for two seasons. In her first season at YHC, Kathy led her team to a State Championship and earned the title Coach of the Year. In 10 years Kathy has led her team to 8 State Championships and 6 District Championships, advancing to the National Tournament in 1999, 2000 (3rd place) 2002 (4th place) 2003 (5th place) 2004(2nd place)and finally in 2006(1st Place National Champions!). She has been named NJCAA Region 17 coach of the year 5 times while compiling an overall record of 175 wins 21 losses and 6 ties.

On February 5th, 2003 Kathy Brown was named Junior College Coach of the Year at the Georgia Women's Intersport Network (WIN) awards banquet held in Decatur, Georgia. This award is given in conjunction with the Georgia Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance(GAHPERD). The Coach of the Year award is presented to a college female coach in Georgia who has represented her profession in performance, leadership, and community service. In 2004 Coach Brown was selected by the NSCAA Coach of the Year for the South Region. At the National Tournament in 2006 Kathy was awarded NJCAA Coach of the Year and at the 2006 National Coaches Convention in Indiana, Indianapolis Kathy was awarded the NSCAA Junior College Divivion I National Coach of the year.

As a player, Kathy grew up playing in South Florida for the Margate Bitz club program. A high school standout, Kathy led the state for the highest number of goals scored in a single season her senior year. The Florida native earned a four year soccer scholarship to play at Berry College in Rome, Georgia. Kathy was a starting defender for the 1993 National Championship team at Berry. After graduating with a degree in psychology and sociology, she continued her education at Jacksonville State University where she received her Master's Degree in Community Agency Counseling.

In addition to her duties as Head Soccer Coach, Kathy also serves in the Young Harris College's Mentoring Advising Program (MAP) as an advisor. This program is designed to promote academic excellence and a sense of personal responsibility among students. Kathy is also very involved in the community in the promotion of youth soccer. By sharing her expertise and the College's resources there continues to be a very strong youth soccer movement in the local community.

Kathy was married in June 2000 to William Barry Brown. In December 2002, she gave birth to their first child, Jensen Kale Brown, only 8 days after returning from the National Championship tournament. In April 2006, she gave birth to their second son Brayden Chase Brown. On January 7, 2008  Kathy gave birth to their 3rd and final boy, Leyton Miles Brown. Kathy and Family

Kathy truly loves the game of soccer and pushes to help her players find their own passion for the game!

The women's soccer team received the Sportsmenship Award at the National Tournament in 2003. The award was presented to the team that displayed the best sportsmenship both on and off the field during the tournament. Coach Brown finds it extremely important for her players to represent the school and the sport in a positive and professional light.
