Background Checks
The College recognizes the importance of maintaining a safe
workplace with Employees who are honest, trustworthy, qualified,
reliable, and do not present a risk of serious harm to their
coworkers or others. For purposes of furthering these interests,
before hiring an individual, the College will conduct a background
investigation that may include obtaining information with regard to
an individual's prior employment history, personal references, and
educational background, as well as other relevant information, such
as a check of state and federal sexual crimes databases and a check
of other criminal activity, verification of Social Security number
and Drivers License. Those subject to background checks include all
staff and faculty, including adjuncts; key students, Resident
Assistants; and Summer Camp Counselors, whether volunteer or
employed, student or third party.
The College may find it necessary to conduct a background
investigation on current Employees, where behavior or other relevant
circumstances raise questions concerning such things as work
performance, reliability, honesty, trustworthiness, or potential
threat to the safety of coworkers or others. It will also conduct
background checks when employees change positions. Employee
investigations may, where appropriate, include obtaining credit
reports and investigations of criminal records, including
appropriate inquiries about any arrest.
In the event that a background check is conducted, the College
will comply with the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act and
applicable state laws, including providing the Employee with any
required notices and forms. Employees subject to an investigation
are required to cooperate with the College's lawful efforts to
obtain relevant information, and may be disciplined up to and
including termination for failure to do so.
