Sick Leave Benefits
The College realizes that there will be times when you will be
unable to come to work because of illness. To help minimize any loss
of income during these periods, Sick Leave is provided for all
Employees.
Eligible Employees will accrue sick leave benefits at the rate of
10 days per year (.83 of a day or 6.64 hours for every full month of
service). Sick leave benefits are calculated on the basis of a
"benefit year," which is the 12-month period that begins when the
Employee starts to earn sick leave benefits.
Paid sick leave can be used in minimum increments of one-half
hour. An eligible Employee may use sick leave benefits for an
absence due to his or her own illness or injury, or that of a child,
parent, or spouse of the Employee.
A health care provider's certification is required prior to
reinstatement after any absences of three or more consecutive
workdays or for intermittent absences due to the same reason. A
health care provider's certification may also be required in other
circumstances. It is your responsibility to apply for any disability
benefits for which you may be eligible as a result of illness or
disability, including Workers' Compensation and/or any short-term or
long-term disability insurance benefits for which you qualify.
Unused sick leave benefits will be allowed to accumulate until
the Employee has accrued 240 hours of sick leave benefits. If the
Employee's benefits reach this maximum, further accrual of sick
leave benefits will be suspended until the Employee has reduced the
balance below the limit.
Sick leave benefits are intended solely to provide income
protection in the event of illness or injury, and may not be used
for any other absence. Unused sick leave benefits will not be paid
to Employees while they are employed or upon termination of
employment.
