Young Harris College Hosts Carhartt Bassmaster Colleges Series National Championship
YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Young Harris College recently hosted the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series National Championship, July 31-Aug. 2.
Eighty-four two-angler teams converged upon Lake Chatuge and the YHC campus for three days of intense competition.
“Our College loves hosting the bass fishermen and this tournament,” said YHC President Cathy Cox. “We had an incredible week showing off our beautiful campus and the surrounding area.”
The University of North Carolina at Charlotte took home the tournament’s top prize, reeling in a three-day haul of 38 pounds, 9 ounces.
YHC’s bass fishing team of Brad Rutherford, ’13, and Matthew Peeler, ’13, finished second in the tournament last year. The duo returned to Lake Chatuge this year as color commentators for Bassmaster and ESPNU.
“As I traveled all over the country competing, I began talking about this amazing lake we have by the College and how good the fishing is,” said Rutherford, who was instrumental in bringing the tournament to the area. “I’m glad to know we put Young Harris on the map.”
This is the second time the championship has taken place on the YHC campus and outside of Arkansas, where it has been held since its inception. The event received national television coverage, and a sizable crowd gathered each day to watch the weigh-ins on the lawn in front of Enotah Hall.
“We were excited to again represent the school,” said Peeler. “Almost every competitor had nothing but good things to say about the area and YHC, which is a huge testament to what kind of place it is.”
The championship will air on ESPNU on the following Sundays: Aug. 10 at 11 a.m., Aug. 17 at 10 a.m., and Aug. 24 at 8 a.m.
