Campus Gate Art Gallery at Young Harris College to Host Artist Reception
YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Young Harris College’s Campus Gate Art Gallery will host a special artist reception with ceramicist Thaddeus Erdahl on Thursday, Sept. 13, at 6 p.m. Erdahl’s exhibition, “no kind of false,” is on display at the Campus Gate Art Gallery through Friday, Sept. 14. The exhibit and reception are free and open to the public.
“no kind of false” is an exploration of myth in the modern age, focusing on the uncommon figure and the characteristics of past society’s underbelly. The ancient Greek idea of mimesis governed the creation of works of art, in particular, with correspondence to the corporeal world understood as a model for beauty, truth and good. It was an imitation of the real world, a recreation of human action and events.
This exhibition, set as a parody of what the artist sees in human nature, tells stories through ceramic sculpture and portraiture that illustrate analogies in life. Erdahl blends together archetypes, shared experiences and personal mythology while working with concepts that are personal and sometimes narcissistic perceptions of the gloomy side of life, using humor as a buffer. Dry or irreverent, it is humor that mystifies the tragic.
“Ceramic sculpture and portraiture, in particular, are forms of a visual narration that I use to satisfy my urge for documenting what I see in human nature,” Erdahl said. “Evocative of well-loved toys and obsolete artifacts, I use the implied history of these objects to encourage the viewer to disconnect from the present situation and conjure their own individual narratives from my sculptures.”
A native of La Porte City, Iowa, Erdahl earned his B.A. in art education and B.F.A. in ceramics from the University of Northern Iowa before receiving his M.F.A. in ceramics from the University of Florida. Throughout his studies, Erdahl actively practiced and taught a variety of art media including ceramics, drawing, assemblage, sculpture, painting and graphic design.
He has exhibited his sculptures and presented workshops regionally and nationally throughout the United States. In 2009, he was selected as one of four artists-in-residents at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg, Tenn., for an 11-month residency program.
Erdahl recently moved to Princeton, N.J., to pursue his studio art career. He is currently the visiting artist at Princeton Day School, where he works in the Ceramics Studio.
