Young Harris College Board of Associates Kicks Off 2013-2014 Local Scholarship Campaign

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – On Sept. 27, the 23-member Young Harris College Board of Associates met in the Recreation and Fitness Center on the YHC campus to kick off the 2013-2014 Local Scholarship Campaign, which seeks to provide scholarship funding for local students attending YHC from Fannin, Gilmer, Pickens, Rabun, Towns and Union counties in Georgia and Cherokee and Clay counties in North Carolina.

Students like Sarah Puett, a senior business and public policy major from Clay County, and Camden Goddard, a senior art major from Union County, benefit from the scholarship money raised.

“I never thought I would attend a small college so close to home,” said Puett. “After I visited and met with the faculty, choosing YHC was an easy decision—especially because of the great scholarship assistance I have received for four years. I am so thankful for the opportunity to get these funds that are available to students from North Carolina.”

“The Local Scholarship Campaign has contributed to my education for four years, allowing me to reach my goals at YHC,” Goddard added. “This fund allows students to propel themselves into their education and receive the knowledge needed to succeed. I am so thankful for the support.”

Established in 1991, the YHC Board of Associates is a group of local business and civic leaders who act as ambassadors for the College and serve as a sounding board for the community. The Board meets regularly with YHC President Cathy Cox and other administrators to discuss areas of mutual concern and interest.

The members of the Board of Associates are the driving force behind the Local Scholarship Campaign. Each September, the Board launches this annual campaign in an effort to assist the College in providing scholarship aid to the students of these eight nearby counties.

“More than 200 students from the counties we assist with these scholarships are currently enrolled at YHC,” said Board of Associates Chair Judy Fullerton, a civic leader in Hiawassee, Ga. “More than $3.3 million in scholarship dollars will be awarded this year to local students, and we are so thankful for the support of our communities who make much of this scholarship assistance possible.”

In addition to Fullerton, the 2013-2014 Board of Associates includes Vice Chair Don Schneider, a civic leader in Hiawassee, Ga., Ada Barber of The Copper Door in Hayesville, N.C., Julia Barnett of Union General Hospital in Blairsville, Ga., Tsali Bentley of Georgia Power Company in Blairsville, Ga., Robert Blalock of Blalock Insurance Agency in Clayton, Ga., Erik Brinke of Blue Ridge Mountain EMC in Young Harris, Ga., Scott Chastain of Appalachia Land Surveying in Ellijay, Ga., Sheila Cody of Nantahala Bank & Trust Company in Hayesville, N.C., Steve Conrad of Enrico’s in Young Harris, Ga., Rick Davenport of Rick’s Rental Equipment in Blairsville, Ga., Kim Farmer of Holiday Inn Express in Hiawassee, Ga., Beth Hand of Stone & Associates in Blairsville, Ga., Robert “Bob” Head, ’59, of Head Westgate Corporation in Blairsville, Ga., Kim Johnson of First Citizens Bank in Murphy, N.C., Candace Lee of the Towns County Chamber of Commerce in Young Harris, Ga., Britt McAfee, ’91, of J.
