Special Holiday Presentation at Rollins Planetarium Lights Up Winter Season
YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Young Harris College’s O. Wayne Rollins Planetarium will light up the winter season with three special presentations of the perennial holiday favorite “Season of Light” during November and December. The shows are scheduled for 8 p.m. on the following Friday evenings: Nov. 16, Nov. 30 and Dec. 7. Planetarium admission is $3 for adults, $2 for students and free with YHC ID.
Bring the entire family and celebrate the season through the wonder of the planetarium’s star-filled sky in “Season of Light,” a show about the coldest and darkest of seasons—a time that holds some of the warmest and brightest celebrations of the year.
Narrated by NPR’s Noah Adams, the show explores the traditions surrounding the world's most endearing holiday customs, all of which involve lighting up the winter season—from the burning Yule log to the lighting of luminarias, to sparkling Christmas tree lights and candles in windows. The program also explores possible astronomical explanations for the star that led the Wise Men to Bethlehem.
O. Wayne Rollins Planetarium features a state-of-the-art GOTO Chronos Space Simulator star projector with a state-of-the-art full-dome digital projection system, the Sky-Skan Definiti, in a 40-foot dome theater. Recently renovated with comfortable seating for 104, Rollins Planetarium offers public shows and educational opportunities for school groups throughout the year. Rollins Planetarium is located in the Maxwell Center on the campus of Young Harris College.
If skies are clear, the Young Harris College Observatory is open immediately after planetarium shows. The observatory features a Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope and is located about 1.5 miles from campus at Brasstown Valley Resort. Maps are available at the planetarium. Observing sessions last up to one hour and include a guided tour of the constellations. The observatory is open on the same dates as Rollins Planetarium.
