Frequently Asked Questions At START

What should I expect at START?

Both days are filled with programs, sessions and activities to prepare you for life at YHC. The student program will conclude on Day 2 around 11:30 a.m. Students’ families are invited to Day 1 of the orientation program, starting with check-in and concluding with a family social after dinner that evening in the Miller Library. A family schedule is available online. Check out this helpful flyer for more information!

Which START should I attend?

All START sessions are identical, so pick the one that is the most convenient for you and your family. Just remember to register early because some sessions will fill up fast.

When do I register for START?

Prospective students should complete the admissions process and submit their deposits promptly to receive START information via email. Register for START by clicking on one of the links below or by visiting your personal YHC website.

START I: June 15-16 
(Adventure Trip I: Flatwater Kayaking: June 16-17)

START II: June 19-20 
(Adventure Trip II: Whitewater Rafting: June 20-21)

START III: July 13-14 
(Adventure Trip III: Whitewater Rafting: July 14-15)

START IV: July 17-18 
(Adventure Trip IV: Ropes Course: July 18-19)

My family has already visited campus. Do they need to come to START?

On the first day of the START Orientation schedule, family members are encouraged to attend specifically designed sessions that address the topics related to having a student enrolled at YHC. Participation for family members is not mandatory, but is strongly encouraged. Discussion topics include academic expectations, student health, campus safety, expected student behavior and overall adjustment to college life.

Where do I park/where is check-in?

Directions are available here. Once on campus, directional signs, YHC Police, and START Orientation Leaders will guide you to the various places to park and direct you to the Rollins Campus Center (RCC) lobby for student and family check-in.

When is check-in for START?

Check-in is from 10-11 a.m. on Day 1 of Orientation in the Rollins Campus Center lobby. At this time, students and family attendees will receive a START Orientation packet including a schedule of events. Students will receive their overnight room assignment while at check-in. Please allow time to move your overnight belongings into your assigned room during the START check-in time range. The opening session begins promptly at 11:10 a.m.

Where will I stay during START?

Students stay overnight in campus housing during the START visit. Campus housing is not available for family members during the orientation visit. Families may consider local hotel and cabin accomodations including the special promotional offer below.

  • The Ridges located in Hiawassee, Ga., is offering a discounted rate of $89 per night plus tax for a standard room during START Orientation.

How do I know if I'm registered for an Adventure Trip?

If you are registered for the adventure trip, which immediately follows START Orientation, you will receive a separate email with additional information. If registered, be sure to complete the Outdoor Trip Waiver. 

What should students bring/wear for START Orientation Day 1 and 2?

When planning what to wear, it’s helpful to remember the following:
  • Student ID pictures will be taken Day 1 during check-in.
  • Evening activities on Day 1 are outside – wear something casual in which you can be active.
 
Remember to bring the following:
  • Sheets, blanket, (or sleeping bag) and a pillow
  • Alarm on phone and/or alarm clock 
  • Toiletries
  • Towel
  • Completed health forms if not already submitted. Necessary forms can be found at yhc.edu/healthforms
  • Anything else necessary to make your overnight stay more enjoyable!
 

What is expected before START?

Prior to attending START orientation, students should have completed the advising and course selection process. Please check your YHC email ongoing with information related to course registration and advising. Depending on your academic program (intended major), your advising contacts, registration expectations, and START preparation guidelines vary. 

When is the optional Foreign Language Placement Test?

The YHC Catalog discusses “Expand Horizons” in the core curriculum. Students are expected to complete foreign language in their degree at YHC. Students who believe their French or Spanish skills are more highly developed than 1101 may choose to take the Foreign Language Placement Test to determine whether they should begin study at a higher course level. This test is optional and will be offered during START on Day 1 at 10 a.m. or Day 2 at 11 a.m. in Rollins Campus Center 202. The test carries with it a $10 fee charged to the student’s account. 

How do I communicate with faculty and staff at YHC?

Students must use their username/password to log into their YHC Email, which students should check regularly throughout their time at YHC. Please consider connecting your YHC email to your phone, if applicable. YHC Email is the official communication of the College. Please review it regularly.
