Counseling and Psychological Services

Counseling is a learning process that mental health professionals use to help individuals adjust to academic and social pressures, plan their careers, understand themselves better, handle their concerns more efficiently, resolve internal or external conflicts, increase their self-esteem, and gain more satisfaction from life. Counseling is generally conducted within a time range from one brief session to weekly sessions of 45 minutes. The Counseling Center maintains contact with various community mental health resources and arranges referrals when appropriate.

The Counseling Center strives to provide assistance to students of all backgrounds. We work closely with various student organizations and other campus agencies to promote success among all Young Harris College students.

We are located in the YHC Counseling Center right next door to the Pruitt Barrett Administration building. You may schedule an appointment in person or by phone (ext. 5167). If there is an emergency, a member of the Center's staff will be available as quickly as possible. Appointments are not required to use the GCIS, Career Planning Services. We are open Monday through Friday from 8:30AM to 4:30PM.

The Counseling Center follows the guidelines set by the Georgia Board of Psychological Examiners and Board of Professional Counselors, Social Workers, and Marriage and Family Therapists. The Center's records are closed to everyone without written permission of the student. An exception to this policy occurs when students are in imminent danger of harming themselves.
