Maryn McKenna to Present Annual Shaw Lecture at Young Harris College
YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Young Harris College is proud to welcome acclaimed journalist Maryn McKenna to give the Shaw Lecture on Thursday, April 5, at 7 p.m. in the Hatcher Dining Room of the Rollins Campus Center. Presented by YHC’s Committee for Arts and Assemblies, the event is free and open to the public. A book signing will follow the talk.
McKenna is an award-winning journalist and author specializing in public health and food policy. Her most recent book, “Big Chicken,” which was named a Best Science Book of 2017 by Amazon, “Smithsonian Magazine” and “Science News,” documents how antibiotics transformed chicken from a local delicacy to an industrial commodity—and a human health threat.
McKenna has written for “The New York Times Magazine,” “National Geographic” and “The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.” Her 2015 TED Talk, “What Do We Do When Antibiotics Don’t Work Anymore?” has been viewed over 1.5 million times and translated into thirty-two languages.
Assistant Professor of English and Creative Writing James Davis May, Ph.D., who chairs the college’s Committee for Arts and Assemblies, said that McKenna’s work speaks to the value of the liberal arts.
“Our students will get to see how the narrative arts and scientific study benefit from each other,” said Dr. May. “Science helps us understand what’s happening in the world, while writing helps to communicate what science discovers.”
The Shaw Lecture Series was established by Young Harris College alumna and faculty member Martha Luelle Shaw, ’29, in 1977.
