Young Harris College Student Artwork Receives Accolades at Annual Student Juried Art Exhibition
YOUNG HARRIS, Ga.—Young Harris College students were awarded Best of Show, second, third and honorable mentions for their works of art during the annual Student Juried Art Exhibition last month at the Campus Gate Art Gallery on the YHC Campus.
All YHC students were eligible to submit artwork created while enrolled in classes at the College to be juried for awards. The student artist awarded Best of Show received an iPad Mini, while second place, third place and five honorable mention winners received cash prizes.
The juror for the show was YHC alumnus and post-modern painter Craig Ford, ’81.
Junior art major Katelyn Jett of Carlton, Ga., was awarded Best of Show for her charcoal and beeswax piece “Busy Bees.” Jett is a graduate of Oglethorpe County High School and the daughter of Dale and Sharon Jett.
“I can honestly say, without a shred of false humility, that I was very surprised when I won, not because I was not proud of the work I had done, but because there were so many good pieces in the show,” said Jett. “To have mine chosen was quite an honor to say the least. I really enjoyed making the piece, so it made me really glad to know that others enjoyed it as well.”
Junior art major Connor Pittman of Lawrenceville, Ga., was awarded second place for his wood and acrylic piece “Raindrop.” Pittman is a graduate of Collins Hill High School and the son of Spencer and Maura Pittman.
“I was inspired by a memory of sitting on the beach with my family,” said Pittman. “It started to rain. The rain never chased us off the beach, and we always went into the water. I was in the ocean with rain falling all around me, and I was fascinated with how beautiful the water ripples were when the rain hit the water.”
Junior art major Kenna Bauman of Young Harris, Ga., was awarded third place for her mixed media piece “Memento Mori.” Bauman is a graduate of Union County High School and the daughter of Jeff and Diane Bauman.
“I am thrilled to receive recognition for my work and hope to continue to develop my art through motifs used in this particular piece,” said Bauman.
Additionally, junior music major Melanie Ellis of Hawkinsville, Ga., senior art major Jake Bennett of Ellijay, Ga., junior art major Maggie Morales of Marietta, Ga., freshman creative writing major Lewis Crawford of Spring Hill, Tenn., and junior art major Taylor Brown of Savannah, Ga., received honorable mentions for their pieces.
