Dr. Sieg joined the biology department at Young Harris College in the fall of 2016. He completed his B.S. in biology at the University of Richmond in 2007, and earned a Ph.D. in biology from Georgia Tech in 2012. His main research focus is chemical ecology, which examines how plants, animals, and microbes use chemical compounds to communicate. This type of research includes a blend of field ecology, microbiology, marine biology, and natural products chemistry, and can span a variety of ecosystems from coral reefs to forest soils. At Young Harris, Dr. Sieg plans to help undergraduates study chemically-mediated interactions within freshwater streams in addition to continuing research into salt marsh chemical ecology along the Georgia coastline.
Dr. Sieg is also interested in creating innovative new approaches to teach introductory and non-majors courses, such as the development of authentic research experiences, courses with high degrees of civic engagement, and novel mechanisms to incorporate active learning into the classroom.
