Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act

Young Harris College staff, faculty and administrators often handle confidential academic information. Sharing of this information with anyone other than the student is regulated by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). This is a federal law designed to limit access to, and protect the privacy of, students' education records. An education record is any information directly related to the student that is maintained by an educational agency or by a party acting for the agency or institution.

  • Inspect their education record
  • Seek amendment to an education record they student believe is inaccurate or misleading
  • Exercise some control over the disclosure of information from their education record (this excludes internal disclosure)

  • Courses taken
  • Test scores
  • Advising records
  • Education services received
  • Disciplinary actions

Public information ("directory information") includes...

  • Name
  • Address (permanent)
  • Program of study
  • Degree sought
  • Expected date of completion of degree requirements and graduation
  • Degrees and awards received
  • Dates of attendance
  • Previous institution(s) attended
  • Participation in officially recognized activities and sports
  • Weight and height of athletic team members
  • Classification (grade level)
  • YHC email address
  • Photograph
