Dr. Pate joined the faculty of Young Harris College in 2013 after serving for a year as the Director of Academic Service Learning and the Bonner Leader Program. His areas of expertise include combining diverse academic foci such as outdoor education administration, recreation and leisure studies, psychology, and philosophy to address the complex developmental dynamics, needs, and growth of students and others. He is currently working on both courses and publications focused on idleness, leisure, worth ethic, existential disturbances, and innovative pedagogical practices centered on the concept of “teaching from the pocket.”

Dr. Pate earned his Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Presbyterian College (1998), a Master in Education in Outdoor Education Administration from Georgia College & State University (2002), and a Ph.D. in Recreation and Leisure Studies and a Certificate in Interdisciplinary Qualitative Research from the University of Georgia (2012).
