Dr. Atherton holds a Ph.D. from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and serves as the Coordinator of Field and Clinical Experiences in the Division of Education. Her areas of interest include the factors that are related to the cognitive lens individuals utilize as they navigate within learning contexts, student adjustment, and the cognitive processes that students use as they solve problems, particularly as they relate to music and mathematical reasoning.

Dr. Atherton was recently published in the Black Critical Studies Reader: Nurturing Cultural Competence While Facilitating the Developmental Progression of the Cognitive Lens.
