YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. — This month, Young Harris College will host a number of shows in the O. Wayne Rollins Planetarium. The planetarium is housed in the Maxwell Center for Mathematics and Sciences on the YHC campus, which is located at 1 College Street, Young Harris, Ga. 30582. Each planetarium show costs $5 for adults, $3 for children and is free for YHC students, faculty and staff. All shows are open to the public.
“Perfect Little Planet” will take place Friday, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. This show is appropriate for children and families, as it takes viewers on the ultimate space vacation. Viewers will discover the solar system in a new way as they journey around Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and Pluto.
“Skies Over Georgia” will take place Friday, Nov. 9 at 8 p.m. This traditional star show allows audiences to explore the heavens as they appear above the mountains of North Georgia. Viewers will learn how to identify the planets and stars currently visible in the night sky, take a guided tour of the constellations and hear some of their fascinating stories.
Observatory Open House will take place Friday, Nov. 9 at 9 p.m. if skies are clear. The YHC Observatory is located about 1.5 miles from the YHC campus at Twiggs Overlook on the exit road leading from Brasstown Valley Resort. The observatory features a 14-inch telescope, which will be available for participants to view the night sky. Maps will be available at the O. Wayne Rollins Planetarium and observing sessions will last up to one hour. Please note that there is limited parking, no shuttle service and no restroom at the observatory. Additionally, it’s an uphill walk from the parking area to the observatory.
On Friday, Nov. 30, “Let It Snow: A Holiday Music Journey” will take place at 7 p.m. This family-friendly planetarium show features a variety of holiday classics from Frank Sinatra and Chuck Berry to Burl Ives and Brenda Lee and includes a stunning multimedia finale by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. The merry soundtrack is visually enhanced with artistic animation and full-dome holiday scenery, making it a fun and entertaining experience for audiences of all ages.
“Season of Light: Special Holiday Presentation” will take place Friday, Nov. 30 at 8 p.m. This perennial holiday favorite is a show about the coldest and darkest of seasons—a time which holds some of the warmest and brightest celebrations of the year. Narrated by NPR’s Noah Adams, the show explores the traditions surrounding the world’s most endearing holiday customs. The program also explores possible astronomical explanations for the star that led the Wise Men to Bethlehem.
