YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Young Harris College’s Campus Gate Art Gallery recently announced the winners of the 2021 Juried Student Art + Design Exhibition.
This highly anticipated annual exhibition showcases talent across many artistic mediums. Awards in nine categories are given to recognize significant achievements and advancements, be they technical virtuosity, conceptual insights or aesthetic bravery.
“Our fine art students and designers have been resilient. They have evolved and adapted daily using critical thinking and problem-solving skills along with a hopeful spirit to embrace the unusual circumstances of the pandemic,” shares Director of the Campus Gate Art Gallery Becky Miller. “Our students transitioned in the spring of 2020 to online learning often without access to working spaces, materials, the Mac lab, software, tools or campus resources. In the fall term, the students shifted from online to on-ground learning, facing similar situations. The outcome is seen in the breadth of excellent work on exhibit in the 2021 Juried Student Art + Design Exhibition. This exhibition is a testimony to our students’ ability to not only overcome these obstacles, but to consider and explore new possibilities!”
The first-place winners are as follows: Mark Williford for “Fish Brain,” painting and Best of Show; Ruthann Smith for “Figure Drawings,” drawing; Brianna Keith for “Reflections,” sculpture; Hannah Cooper for “Muses,” photography; Derika Harpool for “Divine,” printmaking; Sarah Faneuff for “Deciding Factor,” graphic design; Summer Ribas for “A Modern Villain,” illustration; Abram Miller for “Logo Wisp,” video; Summer Ribas for “Reflection Introspection,” mixed media.
Sarah Faneuff received the Richard Aunspaugh Art Award for outstanding upperclassman and William Jones received the Birdie Bryan Miller Award for outstanding freshman.
