Prospective freshmen with outstanding high school GPAs and SAT/ACT scores are invited to join the YHC Honors Program prior to enrolling at the College. They are not required to complete a separate application for admission to the program, but they may be invited to submit materials to compete for additional academic scholarships awarded through the program.
Students who do not enter the YHC Honors Program as first-semester freshmen but wish to join after enrolling at the College may apply through the Honors Program Director. The Honors Program admits a maximum of 15 current students each year. Students wishing to enter the honors program must apply before they have completed 90 credit hours. Applications are accepted in April for the next academic year. Students must submit at least two letters of recommendation from current YHC faculty members who have taught them and a 500-1,000 word essay explaining why they wish to join the program. Students must also have a cumulative YHC GPA of 3.5 or better. Applications will be reviewed by the Honors Program Committee. After final grades have been submitted, the Honors Program Director will confirm students’ GPAs with the Office of the Registrar and notify successful applicants.
Students accepted into the YHC Honors Program receive a substantial academic scholarship that helps to offset the cost of tuition and fees. Students accepted to the YHC Honors Program during their senior year of high school also have the opportunity to compete for additional scholarships during the Honors Program’s Scholarship Day, which is held during the spring semester prior to honors students’ freshman year at YHC. Scholarships awarded include the most prestigious that the College offers, including the Pitts and Presidential Scholarships, which cover full tuition and varying amounts of room and board costs (depending on the scholarship awarded).
The YHC Honors Program serves the most outstanding students at the College, students whose work ethic, academic ability and intellectual curiosity distinguish them from their peers. As a member of the YHC Honors Program, you will enjoy an even more rewarding academic experience than your fellow students. You will take one or more courses each semester reserved exclusively for honors students. These intellectually stimulating, discussion-based courses are taught by the best professors at the College. You will have the opportunity to graduate with an honors degree in your major program of study. You will also receive priority registration for courses, pursue special social and cultural activities and enjoy exciting travel opportunities. Recent honors trips have included travel to Greece, Russia, and a two-week “American Literary Renaissance Tour” in Boston. In spring 2012, Honors students will embark on a two-week art tour of Italy, including visits to Venice, Florence, Pisa, Sienna, Cinque Terre and Rome.
If you elect to join the YHC Honors Program, you will receive an academic scholarship each year. This award supplements other financial aid or scholarships offered by the College.
