All incoming first-year and transfer students are required to attend START Orientation. This program is designed to help ensure a smooth transition to Young Harris College. There are special sessions throughout the program designed for recent high school graduates, non-traditional students, transfer students and international students. After attending START, you’ll be ready to begin your journey at YHC!
During the summer orientation program, students spend two days on campus learning about life at YHC and preparing to become YHC students. You get the chance to socialize with other incoming students and current student leaders as well as discover programs, events and services while finding out what it means to be a member of the YHC community. You also get to meet YHC faculty and staff who discuss some academic and social expectations.
Starting early April, once an incoming student has paid his/her tuition deposit, information about START Summer Orientation is mailed out. Approximately two weeks prior to attending orientation, students will receive an email about the event including when to arrive, where to check in, what to expect and what to bring.
After each summer START session, there is an optional overnight trip sponsored by YHC Outdoor Adventures. Past trips have included whitewater rafting, tubing, zip lining, kayaking and paintball. Students may sign up for the trip when registering for START.
Family members are welcome to join us on campus for the one-day Family Orientation (summer only) as well as our annual Family Weekend. If you have any questions, read the FAQs to learn more details about START.
Welcome Week begins the Saturday evening before classes begin for the fall semester. It is an extension of START Summer Orientation that focuses on getting new students connected to the YHC community and setting the tone for the semester. During this time, new students will learn ways to get involved on and off campus and check in with various campus offices to ensure they have completed all the necessary enrollment tasks (parking pass, finalize health records, etc.).
New student Welcome Week activities are required for all first-year students. Transfer students are encouraged, but not required, to attend.
YHC Bucket List
The campus community created a "YHC Bucket List" featuring the top 100 things all Young Harris College students should do before graduation. You can view the list here.

This program has been intentionally designed to help students transitioning mid-year learn about life at YHC and prepare them to become YHC students. You will get to enjoy the same highlights as summer orientation–like socializing with other incoming students and current student leaders, discovering programs, events and services, getting to meet YHC faculty and staff who discuss some academic and social expectations, and finding out what it means to be a member of the YHC community. Students will also finalize class registration and any other items that need to be addressed prior to the start of classes.
