About Kinesiology & Sport at Young Harris College

The Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology & Sport is tailored to prepare students for positions in health, fitness, and exercise science, or as pre-professional training for a variety of healthcare-related programs (i.e., physical therapy, occupational therapy, athletic training, etc.). The program will also provide students with a broad cultural perspective of sport, recreation and human performance, cultivating necessary knowledge, skills, and attitudes for effective leadership in this field of study.

Students are offered a unique and innovative degree-earning experience, with the choice and flexibility to focus on one of three Concentrations; Exercise Science, Sports Health & Fitness, or Sport & Recreation. Also, through the program, micro-credential offerings could be developed, including Coaching, Pre-Athletic Training, and Sports Media, to support students across a host of degree pathways.

Concentrations in Kinesiology & Sport

Exercise Science

Exercise science focuses on understanding the principles of movement and the body’s exercise-induced physiological responses to physical activity, as well as how the body adapts to physical activity over time.

Sports Health & Fitness

Focuses on individual health and fitness and optimizing physical performance including aspects related to prevention, diagnosis, and recovery from injury related to sports.

Sport & Recreation

Focuses on the administration, management, teaching, and coaching aspects of sport and recreational activities, as well as the historical, philosophical, social, and ethical aspects of sport and human performance.

Kinesiology & Sport degree requirements

To graduate with a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology & Sport from YHC, you’ll take 120 hours of coursework.

General Education:

31 hours, including PSYC 1102 and COMM 1000

Some of our most popular Kinesiology & Sport classes include:

KNSS 2310 Care & Prevention of Athletic Injuries:

This course will provide the student with an introduction to the basic theories of prevention, assessment, identification, care, and rehabilitation of sport-specific injuries. Emphasis will be on creating a safe environment for athletes.

SPRS 3210 Leadership in Sport, Recreation, and Human Performance:

This course is an introduction to leadership in sports, recreation and human performance environments, It examines leadership styles and various approaches to leading diverse groups in dynamic situations, and includes evaluation of role and competencies of the leader and effective program management techniques. Topics include theories of leadership, leadership skills, group development, needs assessment, promoting participation, event coordination, setting and reaching goals and decisions, and risk management.

KNSS 4990 Kinesiology Practicum:

This pracitcum affords students a paid or voluntary, part-time opportunity to apply classroom theories, concepts, philosophies, and techniques to practical “real world” situations, and provides them with opportunity to gain valuable experience in a supervised, sport, recreation, leisure, or fitness related setting. Requires 120 hours of practical experience during the semester. Open to junior or senior KNSS & SPRS majors with approval of instructor.
