YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – On Wednesday, Oct. 17, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Western North Carolina presented a $2,000 donation to Young Harris College’s tennis program to express appreciation for YHC’s support of the Georgia Mountain Tennis Championships. Since 2010, YHC has donated the use of its tennis facility for the annual tournament. The tournament raises money for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Western North Carolina, and this past year, $9,000 was raised for the organization.
Tom Spencer, chairman of the advisory council for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Western North Carolina, presented the check to Dr. Drew L. Van Horn, president of YHC.
“When I saw the YHC tennis facility being built, I had a vision to start the Georgia Mountain Tennis Championships to raise money for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Western North Carolina,” said Spencer. “We appreciate YHC donating the use of its tennis facility, as well as the hard work of Cammie Nix and others who help run the tournament.”
Cammie Nix serves as the director of tennis for YHC. She and the Mountain Lions tennis team help run the tournament desk during the annual fundraiser.
This past year, the tournament was held Aug. 24 – 26 and had 160 participants.
