YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. — Young Harris College invites the community to a free performance by The Princely Players on Thursday, March 21 at 7 p.m. in Glenn-McGinnis Hall on the YHC campus, which is located at 1 College St., Young Harris, Ga. 30582. This event will serve as the 2019 Heinze and Ragsdale Endowed Lecture.

The Princely Players tell the story of the centuries-old struggle for freedom by Africans in America, culminating in the civil rights movement and continuing even today. Since 1967, this ensemble from Nashville, Tenn., has performed a unique program of spirituals, work songs, hymns and songs of freedom. Examples include “Amazing Grace,” “Steal Away,” “Swing Low Sweet Chariot,” “Go Down Moses” and “Wade in the Water.”

Dr. Linda Jones, who serves as dean of the Division of Mathematics, Science and Technology at YHC, and Rev. Blair Tolbert, who serves as dean of the Chapel and chaplain at YHC, have both seen the group perform previously.

“I found their performance to be one of the most powerful and moving ones I have ever witnessed,” said Dr. Jones. “This is a performance that all audiences can relate to regardless of race, religion or political persuasions.”

“The Princely Players offer a captivating and timely retrospective of race relations in America,” said Rev. Tolbert. “They bring passion and perspective to the stage.”

The Princely Players have been featured on National Public Radio (NPR), the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), the Smithsonian’s “Wade in the Water” series and Time Life’s Civil War recordings. Their performance has also graced the stages of the Tennessee Performing Arts Center, Yale University, Ryman Auditorium and many others.
