YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. — On Friday, March 22, Young Harris College’s O. Wayne Rollins Planetarium will host the following events:

– “Earth, Moon and Sun” starts at 7 p.m. This show explores the relationship between the Earth, moon and sun with the help of Coyote, a character adapted from Native American traditions. Learn why the sun rises and sets and the basics of solar energy, and examine the moon’s orbit, craters, phases and eclipses. This show is appropriate for children and families.

– “Skies Over Georgia” starts at 8 p.m. This show features a live presenter and uses the planetarium’s digital and optical star projectors to show audiences the sky as it appears over North Georgia. Learn how to identify planets and stars that are visible in the night sky, and take a guided tour of the constellations. This traditional live star show is appropriate for general audiences.

– The YHC Observatory Open House starts at 9 p.m. The observatory will be open to the public for telescopic viewing, if the skies are clear. The YHC Observatory is located about 1.5 miles from the YHC campus at Twiggs Overlook on the exit road leading from Brasstown Valley Resort. The observatory features a 14-inch telescope, which will be available for participants to view the night sky. Maps will be available at the O. Wayne Rollins Planetarium and observing sessions will last up to one hour. Please note that there is limited parking, no shuttle service and no restroom at the observatory. Additionally, it’s an uphill walk from the parking area to the observatory.

These planetarium events are open to the public. Each planetarium show costs $5 for adults, $3 for children and is free for YHC students, faculty and staff. To purchase tickets in advance, visit yhc.edu/planetarium.
