YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Young Harris College invites the community to attend several fine arts events this November. Events include the Percussion Ensemble concert, the Theatre Mainstage performance of Blithe Spirit, the Group Ceramics Art Exhibition, and concerts by the Concert Band, the Community Band, the Jazz Band and the Guitar Ensemble. These events are open to the public and will be held on the Young Harris College campus, which is located at 1 College Street, Young Harris, Ga. 30582.
The Percussion Ensemble will perform Monday, Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. in Glenn-McGinnis Hall. Under the direction of Justin Iadonisi, adjunct instructor of music, this group will perform a variety of solo and ensemble literature written for percussive instruments.
Performances of Blithe Spirit will be held Tuesday, Nov. 6 to Friday, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 10 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. All performances will be held in Dobbs Theatre in Goolsby Center. This comedic performance tells the story of a fussy, cantankerous novelist, Charles Condomine, who is re-married but haunted by the ghost of his first wife, the clever and insistent Elvira.
The opening reception for the Group Ceramics Art Exhibition will take place Thursday, Nov. 8 at 6 p.m. at the Campus Gate Art Gallery. The exhibit will be available for viewing during gallery hours (Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.) through Friday, Dec. 7. The exhibit will feature works by Lisa Tevia Clark, Jim Clark, Mike Lalone, Rob Winthrow and Hannah Levin.
On Thursday, Nov. 8, the Concert Band will perform at 7 p.m. in Glenn-McGinnis Hall. Under the direction of Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Bands Kerry Bryant, Ph.D., this powerful ensemble will perform a wide repertory of wind band literature ranging from traditional to contemporary.
The Community Band will perform Sunday, Nov. 11 at 3 p.m. in Glenn-McGinnis Hall. Comprised of talented local high school and adult musicians from the community, the Community Band serves as an educational resource for area schools and presents several free concerts throughout the year.
The Jazz Band will perform Monday, Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. in Glenn-McGinnis Hall. Students will play a variety of music covering many styles of the big band genre, including swing, bop, Latin jazz and fusion.
On Tuesday, Nov. 13, the Guitar Ensemble will perform at 7 p.m. in the Susan B. Harris Chapel. Under the direction of Associate Professor of Music Richard Knepp, Ph.D., students will perform works for classical guitar.
