Young Harris College tops 2023 scholarship goal

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. — Scholarships are the lifeblood for any college student seeking higher education. And thanks to the efforts of Young Harris College’s Office of Advancement, students in 2023-2024 are in good shape. The College raised nearly $2 million in fund-raising efforts for Young Harris College throughout the year, designated for scholarships.

“Our team works diligently throughout the year, every year, scheduling and coordinating a variety of events designed to raise money for Young Harris College students,” said Mark Dotson, vice president of Advancement for Young Harris College. “I couldn’t be prouder of the team’s efforts – or the support of our alumni, friends, and community – as we exceeded our goal this year.”

Money raised by the Advancement team aids the College in a variety of efforts from support of the athletic teams to the fine arts and study abroad programs; however, nearly all of the funds raised are used to provide scholarships for YHC students.

The fund-raising efforts ranged from the College’s annual Clay Dotson Open golf tournament at Brasstown Valley Resort – which typically happens in May each year – to a Class Scholarship Challenge, a friendly competition among college alumni to see which class year can raise the most money. The college also hosts an annual Giving Day in March.

Young Harris College introduced four scholarships in 2022, Dotson added, that included specific scholarship funds for student-athletes, first-generation college students, female students, and students within minority groups.

It is safe to say that the largest labor of love in this office is raising money for our students,” Dotson said. “We are proud that 100% of our student population receives some type of scholarship assistance, so when we raise money for scholarships, sports, campus enrichment, etc., it’s all for the students.”
