“Our connection with the UMC means access to the resources of a national denomination that can provide multiple amazing opportunities to students. These opportunities range from spiritual life retreats offered every Fall for the student body at the beautiful Epworth by the Sea, service opportunities across the UMC connection, special educational opportunities that are supplemented by the UMC (such as our own Civil Rights Bus Tour that you can learn more about here), and fellowship with the eight other UMC colleges across Georgia.

We are also supported specifically through the North Georgia Conference of the UMC’s designated Higher Education Ministry called the UM Commission, which provides leadership, resources, and encouragement to all UMC colleges in the state of Georgia as well as helping to appoint chaplains like me to these sister colleges.

Ultimately, I think all of this helps provide a vision for the college as a welcoming and diverse community of people who are trying to really do life together. In that vein, the UMC connection allows our campus to be a place where students can ask the biggest questions about life and be challenged to grow as people. And I think we do that here very well. That’s not accidental. And I’m not sure if it happens without the UMC connection. We want to walk alongside students as they grow into the kind of people the world needs, and the UMC connection is vital in that regard in terms of resources and inspiration.

As John Wesley said, ‘Do all the good you can, in all the ways you can, to all the people you can, as long as ever you can.’ I think that sums up Young Harris College perfectly. Who it was, who it is, and who it will continue to be for the future.”

“I think Young Harris College being affiliated with the United Methodist Church means being connected to a larger faith organization that is focused on developing the whole person: mind, body, and soul.”
