YHC Students Create Guidebook for the Southern Appalachian Snorkeling Trail

Nine students from Young Harris College recently developed the Southern Appalachian Snorkeling Trail and wrote a guidebook for the trail as a result of their research on preserving the region’s water quality by promoting native fish diversity and ecotourism. Over the past few months, the students have presented their work in Washington, D.C., Cordele, Georgia and Asheville, North Carolina.

“Rock the Dome II” Planetarium Show Comes to YHC

The O. Wayne Rollins Planetarium at Young Harris College will host “Rock the Dome II” on Friday, April 26 at 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. and again on Friday, May 3 at 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. Each planetarium show costs $5 for adults, $3 for children and is free for YHC students, faculty and staff. Hamilton Gardens Partners with YHC Student to Grow Educational Programming

This spring, Hamilton Gardens at Lake Chatuge is partnering with Young Harris College to offer a communications internship to YHC senior Savannah Rogers of Cleveland, Georgia. The results are mutually beneficial: Hamilton Gardens is receiving innovative ideas for implementing educational programming, and Rogers is gaining invaluable hands-on experience.

YHC’s Mary Slavkin Selected for Summer Seminar at the Yale Center for British Art

Young Harris College Assistant Professor of Art History Dr. Mary Slavkin has been selected to participate in the seminar “Art and Society in Britain, Hogarth to Turner (1730-1851)” at the Yale Center for British Art in New Haven, Connecticut, from July 21 – 26, 2019. Slavkin is one of 22 participants selected from more than 650 independent colleges nationwide.

Support YHC’s Local Scholarship Campaign at The Big Dance

Back by popular demand, Young Harris College will present The Big Dance on Friday, April 26. Community members are invited to dance the night away while raising scholarship funds for more than 200 students from eight surrounding counties: Fannin, Gilmer, Pickens, Rabun, Towns and Union counties in Georgia, and Cherokee and Clay counties in North Carolina. The Big Dance will take place in the Recreation and Fitness Center on YHC’s campus, which is located at 1 College St., Young Harris, Georgia. Young Harris College Assistant Professor of Theatre Anne Towns will serve as the artist in residence for the inaugural Belgrade International Workshop and ChekhovFest in Belgrade, Serbia from March 30 – April 5, 2019.

YHC to Present Undergraduate Research Day March 29

YHC’s Annual Reece Lecture to Feature Acclaimed Poets Barbara Hamby and David Kirby

The annual Byron Herbert Reece Lecture at Young Harris College will feature American poets Barbara Hamby and David Kirby on Thursday, April 4 at 7 p.m. in Suber Banquet Hall of the Rollins Campus Center at YHC. The campus is located at 1 College St., Young Harris, Ga. 30582. Both poets will deliver readings of their works, followed by a book signing. Presented by YHC’s Creative Writing program and the Arts and Assemblies Committee, this event is free and open to the public.

YHC’s Chelsea Rathburn Named Poet Laureate of Georgia

This week, Governor Brian Kemp announced the appointment of Young Harris College Assistant Professor of English and Director of Creative Writing Chelsea Rathburn as the 11th Poet Laureate of Georgia.

YHC Students Win International Econ Beats Competition

Young Harris College students Mojo Tenenbaum, Lauren Swenson, Elle Hutchinson and John Lictenwalner recently won the international Econ Beats competition. The Econ Beats competition requires students to create music videos using learnings from economics classes.

Enjoy Free Admission to The Princely Players on March 21

Young Harris College invites the community to a free performance by The Princely Players on Thursday, March 21 at 7 p.m. in Glenn-McGinnis Hall on the YHC campus, which is located at 1 College St., Young Harris, Ga. 30582. This event will serve as the 2019Heinze and Ragsdale Endowed Lecture.The Princely Players tell the story of the centuries-old struggle for freedom by Africans in America, culminating in the civil rights movement and continuing even today. Since 1967, this ensemble from Nashville, Tenn., has performed a unique program of spirituals, work songs, hymns and songs of freedom. Examples include "Amazing Grace," "Steal Away," "Swing Low Sweet Chariot," "Go Down Moses" and "Wade in the Water.”

YHC Faculty Member Publishes First Book

Young Harris College Assistant Professor of Communication Studies Dr. Kathryn Montalbano recently published her first book, “Government Surveillance of Religious Expression: Mormons, Quakers, and Muslims in the United States.”

YHC Student Creates New Logo for Towns County Conventions and Visitors Bureau

Young Harris College senior Shelby Lawrence of Eatonton, Ga., won first place in a competition to design the new logo for the Towns County Conventions and Visitors Bureau (TCCVB). Lawrence presented her winning design at the Town’s County Commissioner’s meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 19.

YHC Students Attend Educational Conference

Young Harris College students Taylor Anderson and McKenna Maulden were the only two undergraduate students to attend a conference hosted by the American Educational Studies Association (AESA) in Greenville, S.C. this past November.

YHC Shines at Georgia Music Educators Association Conference

Young Harris College’s Department of Music recently participated in the Georgia Music Educators Association (GMEA) In-Service Conference in Athens, Ga. Representatives of YHC included 32 music education students, seven music faculty members and multiple music education alumni.
