A reasonable accommodation is a modification or adjustment to a course, program, service, activity or facility. It enables a qualified student with a disability an opportunity to attain the same level of performance or to enjoy benefits and privileges as are available to a similarly situated student without a disability. The accommodation is not required if it would fundamentally alter the nature of the course, program, service or facility, or if it would result in an undue burden for the institution. Reasonable accommodations are determined by examining:
- Barriers resulting from interaction between the documented disability and the campus environment.
- Possible accommodations that might remove the barriers.
- Whether or not the student has access to the course, program, service, activity or facility without accommodations.
- Whether or not the essential elements of the course, program, service, activity or facility are compromised by the accommodations.
All reasonable accommodations are individualized, based on the nature of the disability and the academic environment, and are discussed with each student confidentially. Below is a partial list of potential accommodations that may be utilized.
- Auxiliary aids and services
- Note taker, reader or transcriber. If a student with approved accommodations requests a note taker, reader or transcriber, the Office of Student Disability Services will request that the instructor identify a student in the class who would be willing to take notes, read or transcribe for the student with accommodations. The name of the student will not be disclosed to the assistant until the plan is finalized, and at that point the assistant will sign a confidentiality agreement. The assistant will receive a stipend for the service. If the instructor cannot find a note taker, reader or transcriber within the class, the instructor and staff from the Office of Disability Services will secure one.

To determine reasonable accommodations, Student Disability Services will consult with appropriate College personnel regarding essential standards for courses, programs, services, activities and facilities. This process will be based on a careful, rational review of the program and its requirements and will consider whether appropriate alternatives are available, including a consideration of feasibility and cost. The determination is not based only on the past tradition of Young Harris College; each case will be evaluated in light of current criteria.
