Young Harris College was one of only three institutions in Georgia, and the only private college, to be selected by the Association of American Colleges and Universities to participate in this summer’s Institute on High-Impact Practices and Student Success. The five-person team consisted of Dr. Theresa Spanella, Dr. Jennifer Hallett, Dr. Linda Jones, Jackie Lewis-Burton, and Lundon Addison.
Private, nonprofit colleges and universities, including Young Harris College, play significant roles in the everyday lives of those living and working in college communities and are important contributors to the nation as a whole. In fact, a recent report from the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (NAICU) found that America’s private, nonprofit colleges and universities are a vital economic engine to the nation, generating $591.5 billion in economic impact in 2018-2019.
Young Harris College conferred 381 undergraduate degrees and 30 master’s degrees on graduates participating in the College’s Commencement Ceremonies this past May.
On Monday, May 17, Young Harris College hosted the 17th annual Clay Dotson Open golf tournament at Brasstown Valley Resort to raise money for student scholarships. A total of 127 golfers played in the tournament, which raised more than $70,000.

Young Harris College plans to hold in-person, indoor Commencement ceremonies for the undergraduate class of 2020 on Saturday, May 1, for the undergraduate class of 2021 on Saturday, May 8 and for the MAT classes of 2020 and 2021 on Friday, May 7. Each graduating student will be permitted to invite up to four in-person guests to the ceremony.
Former Young Harris College Chief of Police Kenneth “Ode” Henderson has been elected Towns County Sheriff after 38 years at Young Harris College.
On Nov. 13, 2020, Young Harris College’s Board of Trustees elected Jason Norton, ’02, as a trustee.
Young Harris College recently established the Ja’lessa Morris Memorial Scholarship Fund in memory of Ja’lessa Morris, a 2011 YHC graduate who passed away Oct. 24, 2020. After graduating from YHC, she earned a master’s degree at the University of West Georgia before moving to Guilford College in North Carolina. At Guilford, Morris served as a residential education and housing community director, and more recently, as a career guide.
Young Harris College Chair of Communication Studies and Associate Professor Dr. Chris Richardson recently published his fourth book, “Batman and the Joker: Contested Sexuality in Popular Culture.”
Young Harris College recently received a gift from long-time donor Ethel Winters of Hiawassee, Georgia, as a contribution to the Edward W. Winters Scholarship, which was established in honor of her late husband to benefit the College’s Bob & Carol Head Local Scholarship Campaign.

Harris’s life, as well as numerous discussions, we, the Committee on Renaming, decided that Young Harris College will continue to be known as such. We believe the positive reputation and value YHC has earned is based on its commitment to the Wesleyan tradition of higher education to develop both trained minds and warm hearts, not on the reputation of its namesake.
On Monday, Oct. 5 at 8:52 a.m., Young Harris College students and employees were notified by text and email that the College received an anonymous bomb threat to the Rollins Campus Center (RCC). The RCC was evacuated immediately. In-person classes scheduled to take place on campus were cancelled for the remainder of the day. The YHC Police Department, under the direction of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) and with the support of multiple local and regional agencies, was able to secure the campus and discredit the threat by noon. The RCC was cleared for re-entry on Monday at 12:10 p.m. The GBI is in the process of tracing the threat.“Many thanks to all of the officers who responded so quickly to make sure our campus and our community remain safe,” said YHC Chief Operating Officer Bo Wright.
Young Harris College recently announced that Dr. Johnathan Davis earned the 2020 Vulcan Teaching Excellence Award. The $1,000 award is sponsored by Vulcan Materials Company. It was established in 1991 to honor outstanding professors on select member campuses of the Georgia Independent College Association.
On Monday, Aug. 10, Young Harris College hosted the 16th annual Clay Dotson Open golf tournament at Brasstown Valley Resort to raise money for student scholarships. Approximately 80 golfers played in the tournament, which raised more than $65,000.
