Early Childhood Education

The Bachelor of Science in Education with a concentration in Elementary Education will challenge you as a student and equip you as a professional to teach elementary-age students. The program provides rigorous academics coupled with multiple opportunities and experiences to practice your skills in area schools while working with qualified mentor teachers who help set the stage for your development as a professional educator. Our mentor teachers partner with faculty to provide a variety of quality clinical and field experiences during your time on campus at Young Harris College.

The Department of Education approaches the education of our teacher candidates with a view toward the future. We work to incorporate a leadership prospective into our classroom instruction as we prepare you for your future role in the classroom. We also provide student-centered instructional experiences that allow our teacher candidates to study theory and best practices, while providing developmentally appropriate support to our teacher candidates across the four years of academic study at Young Harris College. We take a personal interest in you as a student, be it in one-on-one conferencing, small group discussions, meeting over a meal at the Rollins Campus Center, at our monthly SPAGE meetings, and other events aimed at making you a successful teacher.

Teacher candidates are placed in a variety of different clinical experiences that support classroom instruction and allow our students to develop skills in observing and reflecting on their field experiences. Technology is another important component of what we do with our students and allows you and your faculty instructor to view your teaching in real-time. This enables us to provide feedback and support to you in many aspects of the clinical experience.

The Department of Education faculty members at Young Harris College are very practiced in their teaching disciplines. Several of our faculty members have served as classroom teachers and administrators in K-12 schools across the region, and all hold advanced degrees in the field. Our program is fully accredited by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GAPSC), and our alumni have a great success rate in procuring employment upon graduation.
